Louisa Jacobson’s character now might not have anything to worry about regarding her future, but there was a time in The Gilded Age’s season 3 that put Marian’s possible marriage at risk.

Marian has had quite a wild ride in The Gilded Age’s season 3, but the instalment’s finale seemingly quietened it all down.

Though she’s technically not married yet, Marian is currently engaged to Larry Russell, Bertha and George Russell’s only son.

The couple has gone through a rough patch after seeing their romance blossom quite quickly and then getting engaged just as quickly.

However, even with crisis almost leading to a breakup, the two are still together and might be planning to go down the aisle in The Gilded Age’s season 4 — especially since another major threat isn’t there either.

Louisa Jacobson Says Calling Engagement With Larry Off Was a “Health Issue” for Marian

Even though it’s all good for Larry and Marian for now, a simple misunderstanding almost resulted in the two going their separate ways.

In one of the third season’s episodes, Marian discovers that Harry visited a “house of ill repute” on the night of their engagement, which instantly leads her to thinking he cheated on her. Marian then makes an impulsive decision to call the engagement off without listening to Larry’s version of the story.

However, Marian’s actress Louisa Jacobson is convinced there was another and more important reason to not trust Larry at that moment rather than just mere jealousy — a possibility of him bringing in a venereal disease back home from such places.

“This is a health issue for Marian. Her health is directly implicated. If Larry did this, if he went to that place, he engaged in that behavior and who knows what he could be bringing home?” Jacobson said in an interview with Deadline back in July.

Bertha Is No Longer a Threat for Larry and Marian, Carrie Coon Says

It’s not a secret to The Gilded Age’s fans that Bertha Russell wouldn’t miss a golden opportunity to marry her child with someone from the creme de la creme, and Marian doesn’t seem to be a right fit for this criterium.

However, Bertha now has a much bigger issue to handle, which is her cracking marriage with George, so Larry and Marian’s marriage might become a rare proof of Bertha’s compromise.

“What Bertha knows is she’s going to have to give this one up if she wants George to be on her side again, because she figures out she’s messed up royally when it comes to Gladys by not giving him more say. So she’s going to give him this one”, Bertha’s actress Carrie Coon told The Hollywood Reporter recently.
