Some saw a major potential in Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Barbie, but there might have been a change of plans for a long-discussed sequel — here’s what everyone thinks happened.

The toy stories are not only toy stories anymore, with more and more doll-ish characters moving to big screens in film adaptations after the immense success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.

The movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling certainly started a trend no one quite saw coming, so now we have some news about My Little Pony’s upcoming movie adaptation counting on the same level of recognition.

However, something else has just dropped about Barbie’s future on the big screen too, and Greta Gerwig’s possible sequel isn’t what everyone is talking about; the director’s name is still there though.

‘Barbie’ Animated Movie Is a Sign of No Sequel for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Fans Say

Just a couple of days after My Little Pony’s live-action adaptation was announced, Mattel’s iconic doll has also received yet another feature as Deadline reported that the first animated feature will be produced exclusively for theatres.

It certainly won’t be the first animated film for Barbie, but the potential theatrical release does suggest there was something else Mattel was hoping to see from Greta Gerwig – which seemingly didn’t come through.

“If I have to bet a million dollars, Mattel want to make a Barbie 2, Greta & Margot said no and Mattel just went “find, I guess we’re going back to animated ig”, Redditor TiredWithCoffeePot commented on the numerous speculations in the news-related thread.

“There's tons of animated Barbie movies (44 to be precise), what will make this different? There's no plot yet, but I really doubt it will offer something interesting or never-done-before that will justify paying a ticket to watch it in theaters”, SanderSo47 wrote.

‘Barbie’ Sequel Was Reportedly in Early Stages Last Year

Even though Mattel’s announcement implies that Gerwig’s hit 2023 movie won’t become a franchise anyway, there was a chance it actually could just months ago.

In December last year, speculations started after several reports about Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach writing a sequel for Barbie; it was also believed that both had already pitched their idea to Warner Bros. and the talks had progressed as Gerwig was working on the script.

While the news was never confirmed, it might in fact be true that Barbie’s sequel just didn’t work out, so there was no other way for Mattel but to come back to Barbie’s roots with yet another animated feature.
