Meet Älplermagronen: The 3-Ingredient Swiss Alpine Casserole That Beats Mac & Cheese
The ultimate Swiss comfort food that will bring the cozy atmosphere of an Alpine restaurant right to your kitchen.
Even though combining pasta and potatoes in one dish might sound like an unusual choice for a family dinner, this authentic shepherd's casserole proves that the most basic pantry ingredients can create a true culinary masterpiece.
Luckily, recreating this Alpine classic at home isn’t a difficult thing to do. This hearty combination of tender potatoes, macaroni, rich melted cheese, and sweet caramelized onions is the perfect way to get a comforting dinner that will quickly become a frequent guest at your table.
Ingredients: 500 g of potatoes, 250 g of pasta, 250 ml of heavy cream, 150 g of hard cheese, 2 onions, 40 g of butter, salt and black pepper to taste.
Peel and thinly slice the potatoes. Separately, boil the pasta until al dente. Slice the onion into half-rings and slowly fry in butter until it is a beautiful golden brown.
Put the potatoes in a baking dish, then the pasta and some of the fried onions. Season with salt and pepper and pour in the cream. Sprinkle generously with grated cheese on top.
Bake the casserole in the oven for about 35–40 minutes at 180°C. During this time, the potatoes become tender, the cheese melts, and a delicious golden crust forms.
Serve the dish hot with an extra portion of fried onions on top.
