Having risen to stardom thanks to the role of young Rhaenyra Targaryen, Milly Alcock conquered everyone’s hearts, but there was one person left unimpressed. Here’s what made the actress question her acting skills while working on House of the Dragon’s season 1.

Young Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon’s first season wouldn’t be the same without Milly Alcock’s powerful performance, but for some the actress’ previous acting experience wasn’t enough.

Before landing the role of the Blacks’ leader in Game of Thrones’ prequel series, Alcock starred in a decent number of other TV shows which, apparently, didn’t make her feel like she needed any extra guidance in the world of big TV series.

Things were different with House of the Dragon though, as the actress recently revealed there were some specific hints about her lack of experience after just one day on the show’s set.

Despite having already been cast as young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the series, the actress had to go through an additional testing when an unnamed higher-up suggested she wasn’t fitting for the role yet at the moment.

“On my second day on House of the Dragon, one of the — I’m not gonna say who, but someone very high up — pulled me aside and was like, ‘Um, we’re gonna get you an acting coach’. It just confirmed everything that I’ve kind of known to be true, [which] is that I’m not very good at my job. You know what I mean! I was like, ‘I can’t do this. This is terrible. This is a big mistake”, Alcock revealed during a talk on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon.

The actress also added that her losing a Golden Globe award at the 2023 ceremony was kind of proof of her fears too, which Fallon quickly retorted by saying that House of the Dragon itself had won a Golden Globe anyway, with Alcock being a part of the show’s enormous success.

‘House of the Dragon’ Fans See Nothing Wrong About Acting Coaches

Even though it might have felt like a sign of disapproval for Alcock at the time, it was never meant to be one anyway, the show’s fans think.

“She was brilliant in an Aussie TV series called" Upright " with Tim Minchin. Also it’s not uncommon for people to use acting coaches on projects, especially younger actors”, Redditor mopeywhiteguy suggested in a thread.

”Literally everyone on set wants the show they are on to succeed. If the higher ups were telling her that, it wasn't to shit on her, it was to try and help her succeed. It is also way better to address problems early on than after you've shot half the season. Source: 15+ years of television experience including on failed shows where the problems were obvious from the first day of filming, yet nobody addressed them until it was too late”, lanfordr explained.

“James Gandolfini used an acting coach all through The Sopranos… I see nothing wrong with this. Nobody should feel “above” help”, Wyatt821 chimed in.

When Is ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Being Released?

The show’s season 3 is currently expected to air on Max sometime in the summer of 2026.
