Now that James Gunn's Superman has been released, all DC fans are waiting for one project: Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming film.
Following the premiere of Superman, the first movie in James Gunn's rebooted DC Universe, viewers caught a glimpse of Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Milly Alcock.
Her cameo serves as a teaser for the upcoming Supergirl film, the second project in the new chapter of the DC Universe. Here's everything we know about the upcoming movie.
What Is 'Supergirl's Release Date?
Supergirl is set to release on June 26, 2026.
What Will 'Supergirl' Be About?
The main difference between Supergirl and Superman is the approach to the original source material.
While Gunn's film combined different images of the hero from decades of comics, the creators of Supergirl took one specific story as a basis: Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
According to the comic's plot, Kara and Krypto travel to a distant planet to celebrate her 21st birthday. She just wants to relax in a bar like an ordinary person. However, everything goes awry when Ruthye appears.
She is looking for a killer to avenge her father's murder. However, the mercenary snatches her sword. Supergirl beats up the enemy and returns the sword to Ruthye.
From that moment on, their story begins – a mix of sci-fi and road movie genres, as well as the emotional coming-of-age of two girls.
Who Is in the Main Cast of 'Supergirl'?
The film will star Milly Alcock, who is known for playing young Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, as well as for her role in the recent Netflix series Sirens.
Other actresses on the shortlist included Cailee Spaeny, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly, who voiced Supergirl in the animated projects Legion of Super-Heroes and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz will play Kara's parents, and Matthias Schoenaerts will portray the main villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Additionally, Jason Momoa is expected to make a cameo as Lobo, a charismatic antihero from DC Comics.
Why Is 'Supergirl' Worth Waiting For?
Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El is poised to be more than just another Supergirl. She's a tougher, more traumatized, and more rebellious version of the character – very different from the classic version.
While Kal-El grew up on Earth with caring parents, Kara spent the first 14 years of her life on a piece of the destroyed Krypton where people were dying around her. This experience left her vulnerable, distant, emotionally unstable, and dangerous.
Supergirl will also offer a female perspective on history. It will depict Kara's internal struggle, her complicated relationship with her parents, her bond with Krypto, and her conflict with Superman.
