“I feel like I’m in a James Joyce novel.”

Despite being a light-hearted comedy about a girl dreaming of love in the set of the Irish landscapes, Irish Wish, the new Netflix movie, starring Lindsay Lohan and dominating the global chart, is getting criticized for the wrong impression it creates about Ireland.

“If only there were some Irish people around where they were filming,” wonders Redditor @Chilis1 in a recent discussion, regarding the movie’s inaccuracies about the Irish people and their culture.

Here are five of them that raised the most eyebrows.

1. Lack of Irish Actors and Poor Accents

This movie is, disappointingly, a great example of how wrong the Irish speech can be conveyed in a movie, as most of the characters are played by American actors, whose onscreen accent and manner of speaking present quite a parody to Irish ones, apart from the incorrect exaggeration of this nation being stuck in the olden days.

2. The Unfair James Joyce Allusion

The phrase of Lohan’s heroine, Maddy, “I feel like I’m in a James Joyce novel” in the scene of her enjoying the Cliffs of Moher, simply contradicts the knowledge of literature. The truth is that James Joyce, though being an Irish author, never set his novels in the Irish countryside, mainly describing characters’ city life and inner crises.

3. Fairy Tale-Like Picture of the Cliffs of Moher

Being one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher attract millions of the country’s visitors every year, while Irish Wish depicts it as a calm, isolated place. Although it’s understandable in the sense of creating a special moment for the movie characters’, it doesn’t show its popularity and significance for Ireland.

4. Atypically “Typical” Irish Breakfast

Here is the movie’s inaccuracy, connected with the Irish food culture. While serving breakfast, the main heroine is offered boxty, potato pancakes, and caviar to eat with, which doesn’t represent a classic Irish breakfast. Moreover, quite a false assumption can be made there that alcohol is served for every meal in Ireland, including breakfast.

5. Wrong Glasses for Guinness

It was the moment when all Irish got angry. The point is that Maddy is drinking a pint of stout, presumably Guinness, which is literally the trademark of Ireland, from a glass of the wrong shape and design. This could have been done to avoid product placement, but it obviously took away the unique Irish pub aesthetics.
