Another major point of no return might be on the way for The Last of Us’ season 3, and fans aren’t that sure Craig Mazin’s wish will come true anyway — here’s what everyone says right now.

It’s been less than two months since The Last of Us’ second season wrapped its run, but the series quickly got another major update ahead of the next instalment’s production — and things don’t look that good for the third season anymore.

As Variety reported several hours ago, The Last of Us’ game and TV show developer Neil Druckmann announced his exit from HBO’s series, explaining that he would instead prefer to “transition my complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects.”

Since Druckmann has long remained the show’s only hope to follow the original game’s storyline, it seems like The Last of Us might have just lost it all ahead of its next season — however, the video game’s fans think differently.

“The Last of Us” Viewers Are Cheering Neil Druckmann’s Decision to Quit the HBO Show

Now that the developer has left his spot to be filled by Craig Mazin, who also serves as The Last of Us’ co-author and showrunner, the video game’s fans see this news as something that confirms — HBO’s extremely successful and at the same time highly criticised series has nothing left to lose.

“If only he listened to backlash when the game was released. Was so arrogant that he thought a wider audience would be more accepting? This is a well deserved outcome”, Redditor Shin-Kaiser said in a thread.

“The Last of Us 2 was a terrible game and the show turned out even worse. This can't be surprising to anyone. I've lost all faith in Druckmann”, SamuraiENIX added.

“Hi im Neil, my incredibly controversial 2nd game was adapted to a tv show and it was met with criticism specifically over the casting and writing of the main character so now time for me to go do other things because my grand plan didn’t work”, ahoy_shitliner commented sarcastically.

Craig Mazin’s Plans for ‘The Last of Us’ Season 4 Might Be Rocky Right Now

Even though nothing kept “The Last of Us” game players from slamming both Druckmann and Mazin ever since the second season killed Pedro Pascal’s Joel off, the show’s creators went on to make bigger plans for The Last of Us’ TV version, with Mazin previously stating that he seriously considers helming a fourth season as well.

Now without the original source material and Druckmann’s backup, Mazin might be changing his mind about the series’ long-standing future.

“I hope the show also dies, they ruined it,no need to make a third season either, leave it as it is and save face”, Awkward-Buy8266 chimed in in the same thread, referring to everyone’s agreement that things went down the drain in both the game and the show right after Joel died.

When Will ‘The Last of Us’ Season 3 Be Released?

As of now, The Last of Us hasn’t started filming its third season yet, but the next instalment is expected to arrive on Max sometime in 2027.
