If you enjoyed American Primeval earlier this year, it's time to renew your Netflix subscription. Mark L. Smith has made another excellent show, Untamed, and here is why it is worth your attention.
On July 17, Netflix released the miniseries Untamed, which has remained at the top of the platform as the most-viewed series for a week now.
It is a project by Mark L. Smith, showrunner who gave us another worthy project this year: American Primeval. In his new show, the events unfold in Yosemite National Park, a vast wilderness, and murders are solved on horseback.
So Untamed is a must-see for those who miss Taylor Sheridan and his Yellowstone, and enjoyed American Primeval earlier this year.
What Is 'Untamed' About?
In Yosemite National Park in California, a young woman falls from the top of a slope onto two climbers below. Miraculously, the climbers survived, and investigators found traces of animal bites and a bullet wound on the victim's body.
Kyle Turner (Eric Bana), an experienced special agent Yosemite National Park who took on the investigation, is sure that it was a murder, not a suicide.
The victim is identified as Lucy Cook (Ezra Franky), who had disappeared in the park several years prior. Did she really spend all these years in the forest? And who could Lucy have crossed paths with?
'Untamed' Is a Slow-Burning Detective Story With Strong Dramatic Component
Despite the intrigue, Untamed does not grab you from the first minute, and the series can be called a slow-burning detective story. However, with only six episodes, Untamed's brevity works to its advantage, as it condenses events and creates additional tension.
The story itself is complete and clear. It is simple in its own way but deep in terms of human drama, which is an obvious strong point of Untamed.
Along with its unique location, viewers embark on a virtual and visual journey through a corner of the planet that seems untouched by people.
What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Untamed'?
THR critic Daniel Fienberg said:
“By the finale, mostly thanks to Bana and [Lily] Santiago, but in part because of the novelty of the setting, I was generally engaged with Untamed.”
