This ambitious project is already making waves worldwide.

One of the most visually striking anime series of recent years — Solo Leveling — is about to take on a new life: Netflix has kicked off production on a live-action series based on the smash-hit Korean manhwa. The lead role of E-rank hunter Sung Jin-Woo will be played by Byeon Woo Seok, a rapidly rising Korean actor. The series is being produced by Netflix, Kakao Entertainment, and Sanai Pictures.

From web novel to global sensation

Jin-Woo’s journey began back in 2016 as a web novel by Chugong, before becoming a webtoon illustrated by DUBU, and later a full-scale anime adaptation. The series has smashed records: 14.3 billion views, sweeping all nine major categories at the Anime Awards including Anime of the Year, and translated into dozens of languages. The spin-off Solo Leveling: Ragnarok only added more fuel to the global frenzy.

A world where hunters level up like RPG heroes

The story unfolds in a world plagued by monsters pouring through interdimensional gates. Only hunters — humans gifted with supernatural abilities — can keep the threat at bay. Jin-Woo starts out as the weakest of them all until he’s given a chance to become a ‘player’ in a system that lets him level up his powers. It’s a journey from underdog to humanity’s strongest fighter, all set against a backdrop of magic, monsters, and colossal battles.

Directors with blockbuster pedigree

The adaptation will be helmed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, the duo behind the disaster film Ashfall. They’ve previously worked with Byeon Woo Seok, promising a seamless, ambitious production. Given the success of Netflix’s One Piece, fans are hoping for a faithful, big-budget take on the world of Solo Leveling — complete with stunning visuals and respect for the source material.

When can we expect it?

The project is still in its early days, with casting underway and the script in development. But one thing’s already clear: Netflix is banking on international success. While we wait for more details, two seasons of the original anime are available on Crunchyroll and Netflix — more than enough to dive into the lore and level up your hype before the live-action release.
