A series about friendship overcoming life and death. And the difference in medical experience.

Summary

  • The Netflix library has recently been updated with a new Korean series, Ghost Doctor.
  • This K-drama tells the story of a doctor who accidentally finds himself possessing the body of his younger colleague.
  • Despite the supernatural elements, it's a bromance story that fans of Hospital Playlist will enjoy.

Over the decades, the Korean Wave has offered a number of great stories that rival American television pop culture in terms of viewer investment in the story. And while US viewers have been glued to medical dramas for years, from General Hospital to House, Grey's Anatomy to Chicago Med, the South Korean entertainment industry can offer no less exciting series in a similar genre.

There's Good Doctor, which spawned a Freddie Highmore remake on American TV, there's a more romantic take on the genre in the vein of Grey's Anatomy, Dr. Romantic, and there's a more fantasy reimagining of the medical genre like Live Up to Your Name, about a Joseon doctor who finds himself in modern-day Seoul.

Perhaps the best known, however, is Hospital Playlist, a slice-of-life medical drama that centers on the friendship between five doctors in their forties. Although some of their patients occasionally die on the show, the doctors have fun, joke around, sing songs, and support each other no matter what. This K-drama was created by Lee Woo-jung and Shin Won-ho, who are known for the acclaimed anthology Reply.

Both Hospital Playlist and Reply are available to stream on Netflix, but the service is ready to offer another medical drama that will definitely appeal to those who are fans of Hospital Playlist!

What Is This Medical K-Drama About?

Ghost Doctor, a medical drama with fantasy elements airing on Korean tvN from January 3 to February 22, 2022, has recently become available for streaming on Netflix.

One of the two lead roles is played by Rain, known to Korean wave veterans since the '00s for his R&B and K-pop music and appearances on the cult series Full House, as well as his Hollywood appearances in Speed Racer and Ninja Assassin. The second lead was played by Kim Bum, known for Boys Over Flowers, Tale of the Nine Tails, and most recently Tale of the Nine Tails 1938.

The series also stars Uee, who rose to fame after joining the girl band After School and recently starred in Live Your Own Life, and Son Na-eun, a former member of Apink who is now known for one of the most watched dramas in Korean television history, Agency. In addition, Sung Dong-il, known for his role in Reply, has taken on an equally important role in Ghost Doctor, playing a ghost who has been haunting the hospital for two decades, often helping to save patients.

The plot of Ghost Doctor follows cardiothoracic surgeon Cha Young-min (Rain), who is incredibly talented—he has saved more than one life—but with an impossibly narcissistic character due to his honed skills. His complete opposite is the young surgeon Go Seung-tak (Kim Bum), who has perfect theoretical knowledge of medicine, but is clumsy (yet cocky) in his work due to his lack of practical experience. As a result of an incident, Young-min's soul ends up in Seung-tak's body, and now the two opposites have to share it while changing their approach to work and life.

Why Is This Korean TV Series Worth Watching?

Despite the mystical twist that separates this series from Hospital Playlist, Ghost Doctor is essentially a story about the warm and touching friendship between Young-min and Seung-tak. Even though the drama is heartbreaking at times, it is the friendship between the two that allows them to overcome all adversities and also teaches them more and more lessons about unconditional love, empathy, open-mindedness and reflection on one's own actions, which always have consequences.

In other words, it's a beautiful, heartwarming story about the lives and friendships of people who save the lives of others every day. That's why the series is sure to please all Hospital Playlist fans.
