An unexpectedly deep social commentary from a show that can change your view of reality television forever. Seriously, you have to give this one a try!

I love good old-fashioned reality TV. Give me some unscripted drama all day, any day and I'll eat it up. And while I don't mind a cringy show, I also want something more substantial. Something that will get me hooked and think at the same time.

When I first stumbled upon The Circle (2020-present), I couldn't help but think that I'm about to abandon it after a few episodes. I don't know why, but the premise just didn't convince me entirely. It was good, don't get me wrong, but I just didn't believe that anyone could execute it properly. Well, the show proved me otherwise.

The Circle: Reality TV Meets Social Media (& It's Twice as Addictive)

From the very first episode I was hooked. I finally found something I've been looking for. And I can't believe I almost gave up on it even before giving it a chance.

Every season, the show brings in a group of contestants who are isolated in their own apartments, communicating only through a social media platform called The Circle. The biggest twist is that the players can choose to be whoever they want to be. They can be themselves or someone completely different (aka a catfish).

I was particularly worried about how they were going to handle all of these social media shenanigans, but they did it very effortlessly and it doesn't feel unnatural at all.

The Circle Will Get You Hooked Even if You Don’t Like Reality TV

The show does a great job of depicting social media, but it doesn't push the message too hard. It's equally as entertaining as it is thought-provoking.

The contestants' strategies are fascinating to watch. Some choose to be completely themselves, believing authenticity will win the day. Others go full catfish, creating entirely new identities.

The early seasons are my personal favorites. They set the tone for what makes this show great. The players are still figuring out the game and there's an authenticity to their reactions that's incredibly refreshing.

So if you're on the fence about giving it a try, just dive in. Whether you're a reality TV skeptic or a fan, The Circle offers something fresh and engaging. All seven seasons of the show are available on Netflix right now.
