Are you hungry for intense and gripping teen TV dramas where personal ambitions collide with dark secrets? Then Olympo is a must-see for you, and here's why.

It seems that the days of teen sports TV dramas are over. In the 2000s and 2010s, we had Friday Night Lights, Blue Mountain State, and Make It or Break It. The biggest sports drama of the 2020s is Ted Lasso and it isn't about teenagers.

I was hungry for the intensity and passion of teen sports shows, and Netflix released a project that I needed – Olympo. It wasn't a hit or a critics' darling, but it definitely deserves the attention of fans of the genre, and here's why.

What Is 'Olympo' About?

Amaia is the captain of the Spanish artistic swimming team and a perfectionist who knows no defeat.

When her best friend Núria beats her in a competition for the first time, Amaia begins to suspect Nuria of doping. The investigation uncovers a secret network of blackmail and deception at an elite sports center.

'Olympo' Was Created by the Same People Who Made Another Spanish Hit, 'Elite'

The project was created by the same team that brought us another Netflix teen hit, Elite.

Writers Jan Matheu and Laia Fogue have transferred their signature style of intrigue, betrayal, and psychological tension from an elite school to the cutthroat world of professional sports.

Olympo follows a proven formula for success with its young, charismatic cast and tense environment where ambitions and dark secrets collide.

'Olympo' Is an Authentic Sports Drama

To ensure an authentic portrayal of the world of artistic swimming, the lead actresses underwent four months of training.

This approach allowed the actresses to do more than imitate the movements – they were able to truly embody their characters.

Instead of filming in a built set, the series was filmed in a real high-performance sports center. With its real swimming pools, gyms, and Spartan atmosphere, this location became a full-fledged character, adding authenticity to the story.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Olympo'?

Reddit user Environmental-Car200 wrote:

“Honestly I loved it. [...] It felt fresh and reminded that human nature is messy and everyone is not divided into good guys and bad guys.”

  • Olympo has 43% from critics and 71% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 5.9/10.
