Although returning to Borderland for the third time wasn't necessary, it is still worth watching, especially for die-hard fans of the project.

After a three-year wait, the third season of Alice in Borderland premiered on Netflix.

For fans of the franchise, this long-awaited continuation is a real treat. However, for viewers who value coherent plot and balanced action and philosophy, the new season may be a mixed bag.

Let's find out if the project lived up to expectations and if Borderland is worth revisiting for a third time.

What Is 'Alice in Borderland' Season 3 About?

The story picks up after Arisu and Usagi return to the real world. The two try to rebuild their lives, but their peace is short-lived. Usagi falls victim to an experiment, and Arisu is forced to return to the Borderland.

The games have changed this time: the predictable card suits have been replaced by the chaotic Joker, and the rules have become more brutal and unpredictable.

The manipulative Banda and the obsessive Dr. Ryuji emerge as new antagonists, leading to an encounter with the mysterious Watchman.

Season 3 Is a Satisfying Conclusion for Fans, but It Loses the Magic of the Original Formula

The third season showcases creative boldness but also a loss of structural integrity. The disappearance of a clear card suit system removes a recognizable format from the story, and the new games are uneven, ranging from tense zombie hunts to rules-heavy challenges.

While philosophical depth increases, the balance between action and reflection is disrupted. While Ken Watanabe's appearance and Dr. Ryuji's arc add weight to the narrative, they feel more like a fan tribute than a natural development.

Strong Character Arcs Can’t Fully Save the Inconsistent Pacing

Kento Yamazaki delivers a multifaceted portrayal of the mature Arisu, who is torn between his sense of duty and his desire to save his beloved, Tao Tsuchiya masterfully portrays Usagi's vulnerability, and Kento Kaku, who plates Ryuji, practically overshadows the main antagonists as the obsessive scientist.

However, the series' pacing issues significantly diminish the impact of these brilliant performances. The sagging middle section and abrupt transition to the final battle disrupt the overall experience.

The visual scale and striking scenes can't fully compensate for the feeling that the series was stretched out for commercial gain.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Alice in Borderland' Season 3?

Decider critic Johnny Loftus recommends Alice in Borderland Season 3:

“Season 3 of Alice in Borderland brings back the escapism, mystery, heightened suspense, unsettling violence, chemistry-building victories, and characters who must discover their fortitude while fighting for their lives.”

  • Alice in Borderland Season 3 has 67% from critics and 70% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.
