It's a nightmare for those who value scientific accuracy in sci-fi projects, but for fans of the action genre, it's still a worthy work that impresses even after 22 years.

The end of the world has long been a hot subject for filmmakers. Monsters, aliens, deadly viruses, natural or social disasters – there is room for the wildest imagination and cool visual effects.

Netflix # 3 Movie Is One of the Most Scientifically Inaccurate Films Ever Made

The build-up of fear and constantly changing events is the perfect combination to hide some inaccuracies. And this is the biggest problem with the genre – most disaster movies are terribly far from science.

Netflix works in mysterious ways – and its new hit, which is now the third most popular movie on the platform, is The Core, a movie officially recognized as one of the most scientifically unreliable.

What Is The Core About?

Geophysicist Josh Keyes has made a shocking discovery: the Earth's core has stopped spinning. Our planet's electromagnetic field is collapsing, and Earth will soon perish.

There is only one hope: Keyes and a team of top scientists must embark on an expedition to the core in a unique heat-resistant ship to detonate a nuclear charge. This explosion should set the core spinning again.

NASA Scientists Named the Most Inaccurate Sci-Fi Movies

In 2011, NASA scientists did a noble deed – they named the seven worst and seven best movies in terms of scientific accuracy. And who better to judge the genre than the experts themselves?

The scientists' favorites included Gattaca and Contact, while the worst were 2012, Armageddon and The Core.

It is noteworthy that NASA participated in the creation of one of the listed films – Armageddon. At first, the creators of the film consulted with the space agency, but as time passed, the answers of the scientists did not satisfy the filmmakers, and they finished the film without the participation of specialists. As a result, Armageddon turned out to be monstrously unrealistic.

The Core Doesn't Look Remotely Realistic Even at the Basic Concept Level

As for The Core itself, even the basic concept of the movie is not realistic at all. In the movie, a team of scientists uses a special ship's drill to reach the Earth's core.

In reality, however, drilling through the Earth's crust to a depth of more than seven miles is an incredibly difficult task. At depth, the temperature and pressure become fatal to any equipment.

The Earth's core is about 3500 miles deep, and no material could withstand such conditions. Even if the ship reached the core, the people inside would die instantly from overheating and radiation.

The Core Is Still a Worthy, Entertaining Action Flick

At the same time, it has to be said that The Core succeeds in its main task – to entertain. This is not a scientific documentary, but a science fiction action movie, with emphasis on the words fiction and action.

The Core is a typical example of the genre that sacrifices scientific accuracy for the sake of spectacle. Will we criticize the movie for such an approach? No, we simply recommend that those who value scientific accuracy stay away from it – for their own good.
