Will it be enough to make up for the Irish Wish?

So far in 2024, Netflix hasn't had much luck when it comes to romantic comedies. The Irish Wish, starring Lindsay Lohan, which was one of the most anticipated premieres of the genre, ended up being a disappointment for many viewers.

Now it can be expected that people will approach Netflix’s rom coms with a pinch of salt, but perhaps Mother of the Bride will be enough to convince audiences to lower their guard again. At the very least, the film is already doing a great job by covering the basis of several generations through its casting choices.

Is Mother of the Bride Worth Watching?

The romantic comedy starring The Blue Lagoon lead Brooke Shields and the Nickelodeon household name known to all 00's kids, Miranda Cosgrove, will tell the story of a magical wedding ruined by circumstances that make it almost impossible. The film falls into the same realm as Mamma Mia, focusing more on the mother of the bride than the bride herself.

When Emma (Cosgrove) returns home after a year abroad in London, she is a changed woman. So much so that she breaks the news of a surprise engagement between herself and her now-fiancé. The wedding is in a month and the whole family is going to Thailand to celebrate.

The only problem is, she's marrying a man whose father once broke her mother Lana's (Shields) heart years before. Now they will have to face their differences in order to let their kids step into the new chapter of their lives.

Written by Robin Bernheim and directed by Mark Waters, the film was announced in 2023 and went into production later that year. Now, it's all ready and waiting for its official premiere, which will take place on May 9, 2024.

Though Netflix hasn't been as lucky with its romantic comedies this year, Mother of the Bride does have a strong competitor in its streaming rival, The Idea of You. The romantic comedy starring Anne Hathaway and Nicolas Galitzine was a huge hit upon its release. With an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's hard to beat.
