New Characters in House of the Dragon Season 3, Explained

There are two more Fire & Blood characters to debut in House of the Dragon season 3, and they may change it all in the upcoming war. If you didn’t read George Martin’s book, you might want to know how.
With House of the Dragon ’s upcoming third season now in production, some long-awaited changes are finally on their way after the show’s previous instalment was criticized by many fans.
House of the Dragon’s showrunner Ryan Condal has already teased the start of the war between the Targaryens and even announced some new faces joining the show’s cast this time.
Those unfamiliar with Martin's Fire & Blood may be confused as to how much of a difference two new characters make, but you better get to know them before the third season hits streaming.
Who Is Ser Torrhen Manderly in Fire & Blood?
A while ago, Condal revealed Fantastic Beasts ’ star Dan Fogler is now set to portray Ser Torrhen Manderly in House of the Dragon’s upcoming instalment.
In George Martin ’s Fire & Blood, the character, who is a knight from House Manderly, is seen joining the Dance of the Dragons as one of Queen Rhaenyra’s strongest allies.
Accompanied by his brother Ser Medrick, Torrhen arrives on the battlefield and is able to see through Rhaenyra's other supporters, becoming suspicious of dragon riders Addam Velaryon and Nettles, both of whom he considers untrustworthy.
However, soon after Rhaenyra’s tragic downfall, Torrhen remains loyal to the former, becoming one of seven regents to her young son, later known as King Aegon III Targaryen.
Ser Roderick Dustin Is Also a New Fan-Favorite in House of the Dragon Season 3
Ser Torrhen Manderly isn’t the only one coming on board for a bunch of fierce fights, with Ser Roderick Dustin also joining Rhaenyra’s forces.
Portrayed by Tommy Flanagan in House of the Dragon’s next season, the character is known among Fire & Blood’s readers as a fearless leader with an enormous army of soldiers nicknamed Winter Wolves who guaranteed Rhaenyra’s win in several major battles like the Battle by the Lakeshore and the First Battle of Tumbleton.
Apart from that, he’s also Condal’s personal favorite.
“I'm very excited to bring him into the fold. But he is a fixture in Fire & Blood, and I think he's one of those true fan favorites. I'm very, very proud of the role that we've written,” the showrunner said in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly.
When Is House of the Dragon Season 3 Out?
HBO is yet to announce a premiere date for House of the Dragon’s next instalment, but the new episodes will likely arrive on Max sometime in 2026.
