The actor took the stage for way too long after winning his second Oscar for Best Actor.

Despite all the excitement behind it, the Oscars speech might be a tricky thing to handle, and not all nominees can be considered good at it.

Some prefer composing the lines ahead of the ceremony, others, like Robert De Niro, opt for improvising on the scene, yet the latter option might take its toll on the outcome as well. And probably even with some potential to become another pop cultural phenomenon.

This was also the case for the recent Oscar ceremony that took place last Sunday as it saw The Brutalist’s actor Adrien Brody making yet another historical win after securing Best Actor statuette. However, things didn’t go as smoothly, and the actor broke another record which not so many appreciated, but still thought was a great fit for memes.

Adrien Brody’s 2025 Oscar Speech Becomes the Longest in the Academy’s History

This year’s ceremony has had many iconic moments to remember the event by, though Brody’s award acceptance was something that still has people talking.

Coming up onstage, the actor first made a surprising gesture by spitting out his chewing gum and tossing it over to his girlfriend Georgina Chapman, and then, accepting the award, ignored the 45-second rule saying “Turn the music off! I’ve done this before. Thank you. It’s not my first rodeo, but I will be brief”.

He then continued for 5 minutes and 40 seconds in total, beating Greer Garson’s 1943 record when the actress was talking for 5 minutes and 30 seconds after winning Best Actress for Mrs. Miniver.

Audiences Are Divided Over Adrien Brody’s Lengthy Acceptance Speech

The actor’s decision to deliberately thwart the Academy’s plan of timeline caused some controversy among those who followed the ceremony.

Some slammed Brody for behaving way too selfish and making other following winners shorten their speeches on the movie, others didn’t take it that seriously, joking that the actor’s lengthy talk could’ve been just as long as his movie The Brutalist, which naturally lasts more than 3 hours; ironically, this was some kind of matter after all.

Talking to Good Morning America after the ceremony, Brody said “It’s a pretty long movie so I had to have a little bit extra time to say what’s relevant”.

The actor also added that he had to summarise everything he’s been through ever since he received his first Oscar back in 2003 and “it’s been a very long time between speeches”.

And yeah, well, spoiler alert…

Many social media users joked about the long speech — and its most memorable moment.

But clearly, there can be too much of a good thing.
