One of the most popular fan castings for the show has turned into a reality, but in a way no one could have predicted.

Summary:

  • Kaitlyn Dever has officially been cast as Abby in the second season of The Last of Us TV series
  • Oddly enough, she has long been one of the most popular fan castings for the role of Ellie on the show
  • Casting Dever as one of the most controversial characters in the franchise will definitely cause more backlash from some fans

At last, the mystery of who will play one of the most controversial characters of The Last of Us franchise in the second season of the show has been solved.

According to Variety, Kaitlyn Dever, best known for her roles in Detroit (2018), No One Will Save You (2023) and the TV series Justified, will play Abby in the upcoming next season of the hit TV series.

However, this all looks like a bit of trolling on the part of the show's creators, as many fans of the original games wanted the actress to star in the show even before season 1 was released, but in a drastically different role.

Kaitlyn Dever Was A Very Popular Fan Cast For Ellie

It's no secret that the first season of the series sparked massive outrage from some fans who didn't appreciate the casting choices for their favorite characters.

They hated the idea of Pedro Pascal, who is Chilean, playing Joel, who was a white American in the original games, and that Bella Ramsey looked very different from the in-game version of Ellie.

Although many of the initial haters and skeptics changed their minds when the first season of the show was finally released and we actually saw the actors' performances, a significant number of them remained disappointed and claimed that the show was garbage.

The most curious thing is that even before the cast of the series was officially announced, many fans saw none other than Kaitlyn Dever as the dream cast for Ellie, with the actress herself even addressing it in one of the interviews.

So when they learned that Bella Ramsey would be playing the role, they lamented the missed opportunity, especially considering that Dever was very positive about the idea of playing Ellie.

Abby Casting Will Definitely Cause More Backlash

With the new update, it seems that the show's creators have heard the fans' wishes to see Dever in the show, but in a twist of bitter irony, she has been cast as one of the most controversial and even hated characters in the franchise.

Heavy spoilers for The Last of Us Part II ahead.

The second game began with an infamous twist, as Abby, the daughter of the surgeon Joel killed at the end of the first game, tracked down her father's murderer and took her revenge on the fan-favorite character.

But an even more shocking twist that divided the fanbase happened halfway through the sequel's story, as an entire second half of the game is dedicated to Abby, showing things from her perspective.

Many fans didn't appreciate playing for the character who killed the protagonist of the original game that they had come to know and love, and debates about whether it was a clever twist or a stupid and forced decision by the developers continue to this day.

With all of this in mind, the fact that the actress many fans were eagerly awaiting to play Ellie ended up playing her infamous nemesis from the second game looks too suspicious to be a mere coincidence, and may very well be an elaborate trolling by the series' creators.

No specific release date has been announced for The Last of Us season 2, but filming is expected to begin in February 2024.
