The new season will probably bring back a least favorite character. But is it the right move?

Summary

  • The seventh and final season of Young Sheldon is coming soon, and CBS has released an intriguing promo.
  • One of the scenes hints at Pastor Rob's return to the show.
  • His presence could provide some definitive answers, but it shouldn't come at the expense of other storylines.

We are just one month away from the premiere of Young Sheldon's seventh and final season. Over the course of its run, the show has quickly evolved from a mere spin-off of The Big Bang Theory into a self-contained and highly dramatic story of the Cooper family, offering a touching, character-driven story. With Season 7, the writers were faced with the challenge of not only tackling the pivotal moments that are considered TBBT canon, but also bringing each arc of the not-so-small ensemble cast to a satisfying conclusion.

All of this has fans in a state of nervous anticipation, speculating about what will and won't make it to the small screen. Ahead of the new season, CBS released a rather remarkable video that is both a recap of last season's events and a teaser of what to expect. However, the clip also caused a bit of anxiety, as it hinted at the return of a very ambiguous character who, in theory, could only unnecessarily confuse the upcoming events and make Young Sheldon's finale less definitive.

The Return of a Controversial Character

The beginning of 2024 marks the onset of incredibly exciting news, as CBS has finally given a little more detail about Young Sheldon Season 7 than just an air date. While we wait for the release, a new clip reminds viewers of what happened on our screens almost a year ago and hints at what's to come for the Cooper family.

As we can see, the major storylines that the series will have to tackle were shown: Sheldon and Mary's trip to Germany, the devastating tornado in Medford, Texas and its aftermath, George and Missy's heartbreaking conversation, Meemaw's destroyed house, and Georgie Jr. and Mandy's care of a newborn baby.

Far more intriguing, however, was a moment in the episode 'A Launch Party and a Whole Human Being' when a jealous misunderstanding arose between George and Mary during Mandy's labor: George showed up at the hospital with Brenda, and Mary showed up with Pastor Rob, leading to accusations against each other. What is going on with you two? asked a confused George.

The problem is that Brenda and Mary have buried the hatchet, as the latter simply realized that her husband missed the warmth and intimacy of a person with whom he could share his feelings. Her own feelings for Pastor Rob, however, hadn't gone anywhere.

Despite Possible Challenges, the Character Must Be Presented

If this was indeed a tease for Pastor Rob's return, as uncomfortable and awkward as his appearance may be for the fans and the Coopers themselves, it is a pretty good decision on the part of the writers.

First, the show needs to finally show the resolution of Mary and Rob's relationship, otherwise there will be an unresolved storyline that will frustrate fans. Second, Rob may prove to be a new source of conflict between Mary and George, which could lead to an unfortunate event that just has to happen: when Sheldon caught his father sleeping with another woman. Is it possible that this was due to George's jealousy over his wife's affair with Rob?

In other words, while the return of this character will be controversial, his presence may allow the writers to give the plot some much-needed push. Hopefully the writers have made sure that Pastor Rob's return does not come at the expense of other important storylines, given the reduced number of episodes in the final season.

Young Sheldon Season 7 will premiere on February 15 on CBS.
