The numbers speak for themselves.

Summary:

  • True Detective is an iconic HBO crime drama that recently completed its 4th season.
  • True Detective: Night Country is considered controversial among fans due to its promising premise and open-ended finale.
  • However, the show has been renewed for season 5 and will reportedly continue with Issa López as showrunner.

There is nothing better than having the TV series you love have a very satisfying finale. This is especially true for crime dramas, where viewers expect the final episode to resolve all of the ongoing mysteries and explain the details that have been left unexplained throughout the investigation.

True Detective has always been a show that crime drama fans could count on. Produced by HBO, it checked all the boxes, delivering some brilliant acting, stunning visuals that added to the overall gritty atmosphere, and of course, a whole bunch of unexpected plot twists.

Season 4, Night Country, also had a very promising start, but failed to keep up the quality for the finale. While some viewers were happy to see the ending left open to interpretation and took to social media with their theories, others were quick to blame the mastermind behind the story, Issa López, for ruining everything True Detective is about.

These factors combined showed HBO that the best decision they could make was to back López and continue to explore the same path that led the show to such stunning success. Here's what HBO drama president Francesca Orsi had to say about the renewal decision:

“Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera.”
