The Amazing Spider Man’s Andrew Garfield left the leading cast just weeks before the production started, but for del Toro everything turned out in the best way possible anyway.

It might have been a sad day for Andrew Garfield’s fans when his departure from Frankenstein was announced last year, but they might have a change of heart once Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated movie hits Netflix in November.

Initially cast for one of the leading roles as Frankenstein’s monster, Garfield quit the project ahead of its filming start, causing quite a stir for both del Toro and some members of the production team.

However, Jacob Elordi’s recast came as some sort of silver lining for the director who had to go through specific hardships before finding a right candidate for the role.

Guillermo del Toro Spent 9 Months Designing Andrew Garfield’s Look as Frankenstein’s Monster

It’s fair to say the last several weeks before Frankenstein’s production started back in 2024 were something that del Toro would definitely not want to relive anymore, especially since a major collaborative work with his frequent makeup artist Mike Hill was completely scrapped.

As the director revealed recently, both he and Hill spent nine months coming up with a perfect look for Frankenstein’s monster designed specifically for Garfield; when the latter quit the movie due to schedule conflicts, all of this had no sense anymore.

Still, it seems like the actor’s departure was meant to become the defining moment for the entire film as del Toro suddenly saw Jacob Elordi as a much better fit for the role.

“I mean, it was like Jacob is the most perfect actor for the creature. And we have a supernaturally good connection. It’s like, very few words. Very few things I have to say, and he does it… We recast, and we had nine weeks [to get the look down]. You can’t be under more pressure than that”, del Toro revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.

Mike Hill then also added that Elordi proved del Toro right when he turned into the infamous monster in front of the camera.

“What attracted me to him was his gangliness and his wrists. It was this looseness. Then he has these real somber moments where he watches you really deftly, and his eyelids are low, with the long lashes like Karloff”, Hill said.

Andrew Garfield Doesn’t Regret Losing ‘Frankenstein’ Role to Jacob Elordi

Despite leaving the movie quite abruptly, Garfield still felt like he was dropping out of potentially one of the best movies in his career; however, he had no more doubts when he first met Elordi to discuss the role.

“It was disappointing to have to drop out of ‘Frankenstein’, but meeting Jacob felt really serendipitous so that I could really see and hear that, ‘No, maybe he needed that experience more than me.’ That was cool, to feel that he had a really spectacular time on that job”, Garfield previously told Deadline.

Meanwhile, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is set to be released on Netflix sometime in November.
