The Last of Us’ fans might have seen this major death coming, but Thunderbolts*’ co-author figured everything out without the original game’s help — here’s how Fantastic Four: First Steps is involved here.

The Last of Us’ ongoing sophomore season was quick to witness the gruesome ending of Pedro Pascal’s Joel, though the actor’s work schedule might have given several hints a long time ago.

Even though a shocking plot twist was pretty much expected to happen in the show’s second instalment, Joel’s death came just way too quickly, wrapping episode 2 and providing a point of no return for Ellie and her eventual hunt for Abby.

In fact, Pascal’s brief presence on The Last of Us’ season 2 set was then confirmed by his involvement in a half-dozen of other different projects, which at some point was noticed even by Thunderbolts*’ co-writer Eric Pearson.

Eric Pearson Figured Out Joel’s Fate Thanks to Fantastic Four Shooting Schedule

Even though The Last of Us’ video game is a major spoiler itself, Thunderbolts*’ author took his guesses from a different source.

“I found out about the fate of [Joel in] Episode 2 by learning about Pedro's schedule for Fantastic Four last year. So I was like, well, I know what's going to happen now in that show that I like that's not coming out for another year. So annoying”, Pearson revealed in a conversation with IGN’s Scott Collura.

He didn’t say anything about what exactly made him think Joel had a limited presence in The Last of Us’ season 2.

However, this was most likely the fact that Pedro Pascal went on to shooting Fantastic Four just too quickly after the production for The Last of Us’ next instalment started.

Eric Pearson Is Also Annoyed by Marvel’s Spoiler for Thunderbolts* Secret Character

However tragic Joel’s death may seem, at least The Last of Us’ creators kept it a secret right until the episode was dropped on Max. Alternatively, Marvel’s new strategy might not involve keeping secrets at all.

During the conversation Pearson also revealed his feelings about Thunderbolts*’ trailer teasing a mysterious and random-looking character that somehow appears alongside the leading characters.

As it later turned out, the mysterious guy was Bob/Sentry whose story Pearson wanted to introduce to the audiences with the movie itself, but, well, failed.

“You put that into just the fun of, hey, there's some guy named Bob in this impenetrable vault where we're all supposed to kill each other and he's in medical scrubs. What the hell is he doing here? Of course, the internet has to figure everything out and spoil it all. But in those beautiful, innocent days when we thought maybe somebody wouldn't just spoil everything, it was like, oh, who's Bob? Let's have a lot of fun with nobody understanding and nobody knowing why this random guy is there”, Pearson suggested.
