Hulu cast TV's most trusted mom as a mother her own son won't eat breakfast from. By the end of episode 2, the woman in Ellen Cooke's house has had to reset Ellen Cooke's bank password.

Phony premiered on Hulu on October 20, 2026, with two episodes, and the rest of its eight half-hour episodes roll out on Tuesdays through December 1. Sam Nivola plays Sonny Cooke, a senior in a small Oregon town who wakes up after a car crash convinced his mother Ellen, who also happens to be his high school principal, has been swapped out. Connie Britton plays both women: the mom in the old photos and the one waiting for him at home. Nobody else in town notices a thing, his girlfriend included.

Creator Nick Paley, who co-wrote Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, wrote both episodes and runs the show with Anthony King, with Drew Goddard among the executive producers at 20th Television. The project took the long road to Hulu. ABC Signature let it go in 2022, and Hulu won it in a six-way bidding war, Deadline reported, on a pitch of "Freaks and Geeks trapped in The Twilight Zone."

Episode 1: the shoulder squeeze

The pilot is told in flashback, with Sonny explaining himself to private investigator Sharla (Meera Syal). Nine days earlier, his biggest problems were Chloe (Mahaela Park), the girlfriend his mom can't stand, and Mallory (Grace Brennan), the childhood crush back at school after years of homeschooling. Mallory drops one bomb on her way in: the day after she and Sonny kissed by the lake three years ago, Ellen told her Sonny wasn't home.

Then Ellen finds the dolphin-shaped vibrator Sonny bought for his big night with Chloe. They fight, he storms out and tries to call her from the car while her phone sits at home, and a tree felled by a beaver sends his SUV into a pond. He wakes up in the hospital almost a week later, and the woman who walks into his room is wrong in a way only he can see.

What Sonny has by the end of the hour:

  • A missing phone: His was never found in the wreck.
  • A new photo: Ellen's picture on the school website has been updated. The one on the back of her Costco card still shows the mom he remembers, and the two don't match.
  • A failed test: Sonny and Ellen have a private "I love you," two squeezes on the shoulder during a hug. He finds it in an old video of her at the piano, tries it at the school dance after knocking his best friend Vogel (Maliq Johnson) to the floor mid-waltz, and gets nothing back. Twice.

Everyone around him has a simpler explanation. Chloe thinks Ellen has just gotten nicer, Vogel blames the head trauma, and Mallory doesn't buy any of it. Only Mallory's cousin Weldon (Colter Lee), a conspiracy enthusiast, takes Sonny's side, which doesn't help his case.

"Playing this mom in all of her versions is pretty cool."

— Connie Britton, to Good Morning America

The pilot's last scene belongs to the beaver. At night, it weaves the glowing vibrator into its dam while a vehicle backs up to the far bank of the marsh and someone drags what looks like a body into it.

Episode 2: Sonny hires a PI

"Crosby, Stills, and Nash" opens with Sonny hiding in his room all weekend and eating only packaged food, in case of poison. He turns down Ellen's hard-boiled eggs on Monday, and Weldon floats the theory that she's a lizard woman. The new evidence is less exotic and more worrying: a taped-up broken pane on the back door, and Officer Buckley (Wesley Macinnes) letting slip that someone broke into the house while Sonny was in the hospital. Ellen had told him it was students messing around.

The school turns out to be watching Sonny too. Chloe, who has gotten close to Ellen, gives away where he is. Guidance counselor Mr. Chang (Kelvin Yu) intercepts a stack of enlarged Costco-card printouts that Mallory accidentally sent to the teachers' lounge, admits he's noticed something different about Ellen himself, and keeps quiet about the fact that Ellen asked him to report anything Sonny says about her.

The title is a dog joke. Sharla keeps three tracker dogs named Crosby, Stills and Nash, and she tells Sonny he has no case until he offers her his dishwashing savings. Meanwhile, at Ellen's computer, the woman Sonny calls an imposter clicks "Forgot password," gets into Ellen's savings account and moves out tens of thousands of dollars.

"That's not the Connie Britton that I know."

— Anthony King, co-showrunner, to Yahoo News Canada, on how viewers react as Sonny's view of Ellen shifts

King's point is that the show spends Britton's reputation on purpose. Friday Night Lights made her television's most reassuring mom twenty years ago, and Phony needs you to trust that face before it asks you to doubt it.

Is Ellen really an imposter?

The first two episodes leave room for both answers. Sonny just survived a crash, Vogel puts the whole thing down to trauma, and when Ellen gets emotional in her career-day speech, not one parent in the room sees anything wrong. On the other side, there's a body in the marsh, a break-in nobody investigated, a counselor who sees the change and a mother who needed a password reset to get into her own account.

Episode 2 ends where the first one did, on the marsh. A group of teens fleeing the police after a shoplifting run includes Shovel (Nation Sage Henrikson), who sees what looks like a body and runs. Sharla's voiceover closes on "Somebody saw something," and the last shot shows the beaver watching the body get loaded up and driven away.

How Britton's double role is landing

Seven reviews in, the season sits at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. The split is mostly over how much the premise costs its star:

Herman's complaint is the price of the format. A show about a mother nobody can verify has to keep its biggest star half-hidden, and two episodes in, Britton mostly plays the version of Ellen you're not supposed to trust.

Episode 3, "Reverse Cuckoo Situation," arrives October 27. Sonny has no phone, a PI working for his dishwashing money, and the only confirmed witness to anything in this town is a beaver.
