Pierce Brosnan Defends His ‘MobLand’ Accent: “I Gave It Full Tilt”

The actor went to his Irish roots thanks to a leading role in the partially Guy Ritchie-directed crime drama MobLand. But some viewers felt weird about his character — here’s what Pierce Brosnan says about all the backlash.
The Tom Hardy-led crime drama series MobLand might be talking about some pretty serious things, but viewers still found something distracting in Pierce Brosnan’s Conrad Harrigan.
The show that also stars Helen Mirren as Conrad’s wife Maeve follows the events that unfold amidst an ongoing feud between two influential crime families, with Tom Hardy’s Harry Da Souza coming as a fixer who will help the Harrigans navigate through the escalating conflict.
It didn’t take long for most viewers to guess about Conrad’s Irish descent, and somehow it turned into a reason big enough to slam Brosnan.
Pierce Brosnan Says He Gave “Full Tilt” to His Irish Accent in ‘MobLand’
It might be that Brosnan himself comes from an Irish family and particularly grew up in Drogheda, County Louth, later moving to England and the US, but some pointed out his weird take on an accent of his own country.
The actor recently addressed the issue by saying that Ireland actually has lots of different tongues which even he can’t handle that well.
“My own accent is very soft … Conrad’s accent is a million miles away from me”, Brosnan revealed in an interview with Radio Times, also adding that he had to work with a dialect coach to make his pronunciation more convincing.
“I told him that I needed a Kerry accent. So he gave me the name of a man, and I Googled the guy and that was it. It was a Kerry accent. And so, I just gave it full tilt”, the actor said.
‘MobLand’ Fans See No Problem With Pierce Brosnan’s Kerry Accent
Even though some still tried to hint at Brosnan’s unrealistic take on the whole accent thing, others wondered why it would matter that much anyway.
“I thought his accent was fine... I think people get weirdly prideful about accents and try to become accent elitists every time they find out an actor isn't native to whatever accent and/or language they are using”, Redditor boomosaur revealed in a thread.
“Roasting? He should get an award. Absolutely dominating every scene he’s in. Big fan”, devadander23 added.
“Just because he’s Irish doesn’t mean he should automatically be able to do any Irish accent. Some English actors might not be able to do certain English accents (Scouse, geordie etc). Some American actors can’t do certain American accents etc”, HutchyRJS commented.
When Is ‘MobLand’ Next Episode Coming?
The first season’s finale will air on Paramount+ on June 1.
