Season 2 of the Paramount+ hit has revived the strangest complaint on television: a Drogheda-born actor accused of faking Irishness.

A thread that started as a tribute to Pierce Brosnan's "masterclass" in MobLand season 2 curdled within hours into a pile-on about Conrad Harrigan's voice. The verdicts ran from overacting to the accent itself — "his Irish accent is horrific," in the words of one viewer who admitted to thinking he's "one of the worst actors around."

Brosnan was born in Drogheda, Ireland. The complaint amounts to an Irishman failing to sound convincingly Irish, and the absurdity wasn't lost on the thread itself:

"Imagine being Irish and having everyone drag you for your Irish accent."

This argument is on its second season

The accent discourse is a MobLand tradition at this point. When season 1 premiered, the Irish Independent called Conrad's voice "all over the shop and a huge distraction," and Brosnan answered the backlash in Radio Times with the key fact everyone keeps skipping: Conrad's voice is a construction, and deliberately not his own.

"My own accent is very soft, Conrad's accent is a million miles away from me."

— Pierce Brosnan, to Radio Times, May 2025

His dialect coach pointed him to a model, and Brosnan ran with it: "It was a Kerry accent and so I just gave it full tilt." The model is widely believed to be Kerry politician Michael Healy-Rae, who, asked about it, replied: "Sure, of course I am."

Conrad Harrigan's accent was modeled on a real Kerry politician. Viewers still vote it the least believable thing in a show about a gangster dynasty.

Why the real thing sounds fake

Here's my actual position on this fight: the audience's ear is the problem, and Brosnan spent forty years training it. Since leaving Ireland as a kid and sanding his voice down through London drama school, Remington Steele, and four Bond films, "Pierce Brosnan" has meant a smooth mid-Atlantic purr. That voice is the baseline audiences now file under "authentic."

So when he finally plays loudly, theatrically Irish — full-tilt Kerry, borrowed from a real Kerry man — the performance registers as costume jewelry. Decades of Hollywood neutrality bought him an ear that now rejects his own country's sounds coming out of his mouth. An English or American actor doing the same accent at the same volume would be called brave; the actual Irishman gets called a fake.

The season 2 finale lands November 20, so there are three more weeks of this discourse guaranteed. Somewhere in Kerry, Michael Healy-Rae remains the only person involved who finds the whole thing purely flattering.
