Frankie Cooper spent MobLand season 2 looking untouchable. Then Harry Da Souza said the name of a prison, and Frankie stopped smiling.

MobLand season 2 has spent seven episodes making Frankie Cooper the scariest man in the Harrigans' world, and Johnny Flynn plays him like a drug lord who has never once been surprised. Episode 7, "Ace of Spades," which hit Paramount+ on October 30, finally gives Tom Hardy's Harry Da Souza something to hold over him. It's a person, he's locked up, and Frankie has spent the season pretending he doesn't care about him.

Spoilers for episode 7 from here.

Who Michael Cooper is

Michael Cooper is Frankie's son. He's serving time in Newgate Prison, held on a drugs conviction, Esquire UK reports. In the world of MobLand, being someone's son is enough to make you leverage.

Frankie certainly talks like he wouldn't miss him. When Harry brings Michael up, Frankie dismisses him as a "lazy good-for-nothing toe rag." Harry doesn't buy it, and the episode makes clear he's right not to.

How Harry found the soft spot

The episode opens with Frankie winning. His attacks have already killed Conrad's dogs and the family's horses, and in "Ace of Spades" he reaches Paul O'Donnell (Emmett J. Scanlan) through Sicily, a woman from Paul's past, captures him and uses him as bait to summon Harry.

Here's how the night at the Riviera Palm Casino plays out:

  • The warning: On the call that draws Harry in, Paul calls him "bro," a signal that he's in danger. Harry gets it.
  • The ace: At Frankie's private table, Harry plays his card, Newgate Prison, where Michael is held. Frankie stops smiling.
  • The roulette: Frankie makes Harry play Russian roulette. After two empty pulls aimed at Harry, Harry overpowers him and turns the revolver on Frankie. Another empty pull, and Frankie orders his men to let Harry and Paul go.

Frankie folding after one word is the tell. A man who really thought his son was a lazy toe rag wouldn't have handed over his hostage to keep him safe.

Frankie spent the episode calling his son worthless. Then he gave up Paul, a loaded revolver and his whole trap the second Harry said "Newgate."

The 3 a.m. phone call

Harry doesn't stop at a bluff. In the final scene, he calls Michael on the phone hidden in his cell, introduces himself to a total stranger and tells him that at "3:00 a.m., you, son, are gonna get clapped."

In British gangland slang, getting "clapped" means getting shot or violently attacked, and inside a prison it means an ambush. The episode ends before 3 a.m., so it doesn't show whether anything happens.

My read is that the warning matters more than the threat. A hit doesn't need an appointment. A phone call to a scared son guarantees that the next call goes to his father, and Harry gets to watch Frankie scramble to protect the one person he swore he didn't care about.

What's next

MobLand season 2 runs ten episodes on Paramount+, with the finale on November 20. Season 1 opened to 2.2 million viewers, at the time the biggest global series launch in the streamer's history, so there's little doubt how much rope Paramount+ will give the show to settle the Cooper war.

Episode 8 arrives November 6. By then, Frankie will know exactly how Harry plays, and Michael will know his father is the reason a man named Harry has his number.
