Ready to be confused and sad?

The world of cinema is mostly colorful and bright and it gives you a chance to escape your reality and dive deeper into different sorts of fantasies. It’s so inspiring to see the good always winning despite all the obstacles and for example love beating it all in a romantic comedy.

However, real life is not always like that, that’s why along with the feel-good movies there are also many films that hit hard. It’s especially painful to watch movies like that because deep inside, you still have hope that everything’s going to work out for the best for the main characters. But sometimes it just doesn't…

Here we have 5 movies that will break your heart. So if you are in a mood for some deep thinking and/or crying, this list is for you.

1. Se7en (1995)

David Fincher's 23-year-old film has an all-star cast that includes Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Gweneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey, so you know it is a must-see. But the story is so gripping and chilling that you'll find yourself thinking deep thoughts after the finale.

The movie revolves around two detectives, a veteran and a rookie, who try to hunt down a serial killer who kills people who have sinned. But you won't get your typical "good guys win" trope at the end. Fincher went for something very different, but much more complex.

“Se7en's ending is more than just the bad guy winning. Like Rashomon, it sticks out in your mind because there is no solution. Brad Pitt faces a choice between a vengeance that is literally nothing but wrath, or a moral high ground that still feels like failure,” one redditor said.

2. No Country For Old Men (2007)

You should never take what is not yours, or else... Someone should have told Llewelyn Moss that before he found and took $2 million in blood money. Looks like he stumbled upon a drug deal gone bad, because right next to the money were the bodies of drug dealers. The poor man decided it’s a present from God and ran away with the money.

However, he still caught the attention of psychopathic killer Anton Chigurh, played brilliantly by Javier Bardem, who will stop at nothing and kill anyone on his way to getting the money. The ending of the movie is dark and cynical, and centers around the main detective losing faith in humanity.

3. Requiem for a Dream (2000)

Darren Aronofsky’s legendary horror drama follows Jared Leto, Ellen Burstyn, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans’ characters being trapped in their own dreams. The film focuses on four utopia stories of the characters. They wish to be something so much more than they are, but in reality they are just addicts who can't do anything with their lives.

Sara spends all her time dreaming to become a TV show star, Harry and his friend Tyrone are just junkies who think their lives would have been better if they were kingpins, and Marion wants to make a career in fashion, but is swept along in Harry's drug-centric world.

The addictions ruin what is left of their miserable lives and they all end up somewhere worse than where they started.

4. The Mist (2007)

This sci-fi horror thriller centers on a story in which small-town citizens have to face a freak storm that brought to life some bloodthirsty creatures, who appear to come to light from a strange mist.

Several main characters, The Draytons family, including David, Steff and their son Billy, and their neighbor Brent Norton are trapped in a store with some other people, when they realize that the mist is making them turn into killers.

The ending of the movie has divided the audience into two groups: those who laughed at the end because of the misery the main characters go through in the last scene, just before the world is back to normal (but they will never know it); and those who sat there silently realizing what just happened...

5. Cabin in the Woods (2011)

The aftertaste of this movie is so bitter that you won't be able to smile for a long time after watching it. The movie is about five friends who go on a trip to a cabin in the country but end up getting killed one by one. The evil events begin to unfold and their minds are becoming infected. In the end, no one is saved...

“Yeah I mean, that ending is kind of portrayed as a weird sort of vindictive victory for the characters we follow and feels cathartic, but is it a disaster for the rest of the planet? Such an odd line to tow but it does it fantastically,” Redditor Hechtic said.
