This Friends plot hole was so blatantly ever-present that even Joey acknowledged it.

Summary:

  • Central Perk was the friend group’s favorite spot to gather in Friends, save for Monica’s apartment.
  • Friends always sat there despite having jobs, and in Season 6, Joey said that was the reason their bosses hated them.
  • Another Central Perk plot hole, the couch spot, was addressed way earlier, in Season 2, with the bullies’ storyline.

One of the most popular sitcoms in history, Friends consists of only two things: great moments and glaring plot holes. We’d sit here all week if we were to list all the oversights and inconsistencies in this iconic series — but few are as blatant as the one giant plot hole Friends itself had to acknowledge in Season 6 through Joey’s snarky one-liner. Aimed at his Friends, of course.

Joey Took Shots at the Central Perk Plot Hole

Central Perk is one of the two most iconic Friends locations, the other one being Monica’s apartment. For many years, everyone and their unfortunate partners at the time gathered in the cafe daily, discussing their problems or just having a great time. There was only one small issue with their innocent habit: most of them had real jobs.

In Season 6 Episode 8, Friends acknowledged that, indeed, a group of friends in their late twenties and early thirties with regular jobs could have never had a custom of sitting around in their favorite cafe in the middle of the day. The harsh revelation came from Joey — the only person in the group who actually could do that, mostly.

When his friends were ranting about how much their bosses didn’t like them, Joey made a snarky remark, saying, “Maybe it's because you’re all hanging around here at 11:30 on a Wednesday! ” This reminded everyone they had jobs to do, and the others rushed out of Central Perk, leaving the amused actor alone in the cafe.

Friends Addressed Another Central Perk Issue

Friends’ favorite cafe had another massive plot hole associated with it: their lucky spot. For 10 years, this one friend group was dominating the luxurious couch in the middle, leaving every other client to sit at the basic tables. No one ever took the sweet spot, and everyone was okay with them sitting there for hours!

But Friends addressed this plot hole way earlier: in Season 2 Episode 21, Chandler and Ross have to deal with the bullies who also want to sit on the couch. But even then, that was a one-off incident, and after it was resolved, the friend groups’ monopoly on the best spot in Central Perk kept going for many more years.
