Initially having fallen into universal disgrace, the movie is currently considered one of the greatest films ever made.

Ridley Scott can be easily judged for his historical dramas’ inaccuracy, but it might be really hard to understate the director’s influence on what modern cinema is like right now.

Before celebrating another major milestone in the career with the release of Gladiator back in 2000, Scott was a master of the sci-fi genre, helming a 1979 horror movie Alien that would later turn into yet another cult classic film belonging in Scott’s filmography.

Just three years later, it was time for another sci-fi hit to land in theatres, and this one has so far remained one of the director’s greatest cinematic achievements. Despite the initial controversy that the flick caused among critics, it’s still an entertaining watch for many fans across the globe, and more than 40 years later it’s finally made its way to streaming.

Based on Philip K. Dick’s dystopian sci-fi novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Blade Runner was released back in 1982 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon and a cult work of the cyberpunk genre, spawning a series of sequels, video games, anime and TV shows.

It stars Harrison Ford as burnt-out cop Rick Deckard, living in the dystopian version of Los Angeles in 2019 when the advanced technology allows humans to make androids known as replicants; these synthetic humans, bio-engineered by the powerful Tyrell Corporation, are created specifically to work on space colonies.

However, when a group of rebellious androids plans an escape back to Earth, Deckard is assigned to track them all down.

Blade Runner Is an Inspiring Story About Human Nature

Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit came as a truly unique cinematic experience not just because it later on brought the entire Blade Runner universe into the pop culture, but also because it was the first film of this kind to offer a more profound view on what it’s like to be a human.

Reflecting on whether a human being can in fact be replicated completely or it’s just physical abilities that the android will inherit after all, Scott’s work sees Deckard delving into the matter too, with the task of hunting the rebellious androids down prompting him to think about their own identity and free will.

Despite Denis Villeneuve’s more modern sequel released in 2017, Scott’s original Blade Runner remains everyone’s forever favorite, still holding impressive scores of 89% and 91% from critics and audiences respectively on Rotten Tomatoes.
