Rockstar guards GTA 6 like a state secret — one actor just blabbed his role on a red carpet

Rockstar Games has spent years running Grand Theft Auto VI like a classified program. No cast list, no confirmations, NDAs thick enough to stop a bullet — the company won't even acknowledge who plays its own protagonists, which is why fans reverse-engineer the cast by ear like audio forensics experts.

Then Stephen Root walked a pre-Emmys red carpet, got asked the question, chuckled once, and folded immediately.

"Yeah, you're going to see me in it"

That's the actual quote the 74-year-old character actor — Milton from Office Space, Fuches from Barry, the voices of Bill and Buck on King of the Hill — handed to the Associated Press at the BAFTA TV Tea Party, making him the first actor in the franchise's history to confirm a GTA 6 role before launch. His reasoning for shrugging off the omertà is airtight, honestly: fans clocked his extremely recognizable voice the moment the second trailer dropped, so as far as he's concerned, the secret died a year ago. He's not wrong! The internet had him pegged as Brian Heder — the retired smuggler who rents protagonist Jason a spot on his weed farm — within roughly 45 minutes of that trailer.

Root, for the record, sounds thrilled rather than nervous about going off-script, telling the interviewer:

"I'm so happy to be involved with it."

Why this is a genuinely big deal

  • Rockstar's cast secrecy isn't a quirk, it's doctrine — the actress everyone believes plays Lucia still hasn't said a word, and impostor accounts claiming to be her keep getting torched.
  • The franchise has history with heavy hitters keeping quiet: Ray Liotta, Samuel L. Jackson and Ricky Gervais all did their GTA time under wraps in earlier eras.
  • Root even casually confirmed the release date — November 19 — like a man reading a grocery list, on a carpet, into a camera.
