Hondo's new team has a mole, a review board and a mayor's office that would like it gone. Only one of those has ever been taken down with a battering ram.

S.W.A.T. Exiles premiered on Starz on September 25, 2026, with Shemar Moore back as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson. Showrunner Jason Ning pulls Hondo out of forced retirement to run an experimental last-chance unit of young, inexperienced recruits: Jude, Ethan, Cassidy, Sam and Malik. Six of the season's 10 episodes have aired, and the cases of the week have been loud.

The season's real opponent has been quieter. Hondo spent the first half figuring out why his squad kept walking into trouble, and the answer didn't come from a gang or a cartel. Spoilers through episode 6 from here.

How Hondo found the mole

The leak hunt played out over three episodes:

  • Episode 3: Hondo admits he falsified an after-action report to protect Sam, and he concludes that someone inside the squad is leaking operational details.
  • Episode 4, "Get Clear": Ethan reveals he kept drone footage that was supposed to be destroyed. Hondo uses it as bait, and the footage catches Malik (Adain Bradley) slipping into a dark office to steal a memory drive for Miranda Seitzmeier, the mayor's chief of staff.
  • Episode 5, "Molotov Cocktail Attire": Hondo demotes Malik from Scout, telling him it's to smoke out the traitor, and points suspicion at Cassidy, who had reported Hondo to the review board. Then he watches Malik meet Miranda and has Ethan call a burner phone to confirm.

Hondo doesn't fire Malik. Malik's betrayal is tied to his family, and he did step into a shootout to save his teammates, so Hondo keeps him on the squad as a double agent. He still sees him as a traitor. He just has more use for him on the inside.

Who's at City Hall

Miranda works for Mayor Voss, and the second half of the season is lining up around her office. Ready Steady Cut's episode 5 recap ties her to a lithium trade deal that serves the mayor's political ambitions. Hondo's next target isn't Miranda herself, though. He wants to know who's pulling her strings.

Hondo spent the original S.W.A.T. kicking down doors. His new enemy works behind one with a receptionist.

That's a smart turn for a spin-off built around kids nobody wanted. A squad designed to fail is an easy target for a city government that would rather it did, and Hondo's best weapon right now is a rookie he can't trust.

What's next

Episode 6, "Hate Crime," set City Hall aside for a Jude-focused story about his old undercover identity resurfacing. Critics have liked the procedural engine more than the character work so far.

"S.W.A.T. Exiles continues to be an efficient procedural in its cases of the week."

— Jonathon Wilson, Ready Steady Cut, on episode 5

Four episodes remain. Hondo knows the leak, he has his own man inside Miranda's operation, and he doesn't yet know who she answers to. For a squad that started the season on its last chance, the people trying to shut it down have just become the case.
