The Palme d'Or winner is built on a real custody case that Romanians are still arguing about, and Neon is releasing it on a very familiar schedule.

Fjord opens in US theaters on October 9, 2026, through Neon, which bought North American, UK, Australian and New Zealand rights on the eve of the film's Cannes premiere and then watched it win the Palme d'Or. It's Neon's seventh straight Palme winner, and the distributor knows exactly what to do with these by now:

  • Parasite (Palme 2019): US release October 11, 2019, then Best Picture
  • Titane (2021): October 1, 2021
  • Triangle of Sadness (2022): October 7, 2022
  • Anatomy of a Fall (2023): October 13, 2023
  • Anora (2024): October 18, 2024, then Best Picture
  • It Was Just an Accident (2025): October 2025
  • Fjord (2026): October 9, 2026

So, no, the date is not a coincidence. Before landing in US theaters, Fjord stopped at TIFF and NYFF, and it has been playing in France since August 19.

Stan plays Mihai Gheorghiu, a devout Romanian evangelical who moves his Norwegian wife Lisbet (Renate Reinsve) and their five kids to her small coastal hometown. The locals start noticing things about how the kids are raised, and Norway's child protection agency, Barnevernet, opens an investigation. Stan shaved his head for it, and Mungiu admitted to Deadline that he originally thought the actor was too good-looking for the part. He changed his mind: Stan, he said, "doesn't need to be handsome to keep you glued to the screen."

It's the second time Stan and Reinsve have played opposite each other, after 2024's A Different Man. Both come in as recent Oscar nominees, Stan for The Apprentice and Reinsve for Sentimental Value.

The real case

Mungiu, who won his first Palme for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007, built Fjord around the 2015 case of Marius and Ruth Bodnariu, a Pentecostal Romanian-Norwegian couple whose five children were taken by Barnevernet after reports that they were being spanked. Corporal punishment is illegal in Norway. The kids were returned roughly seven months later, the family left the country, and in between, the case set off protests across Romanian diaspora and evangelical communities, with American evangelicals piling on.

Mungiu followed cases like it for close to a decade, and he's been careful about what the film is and isn't:

"Fjord is not a reenactment of that case."

โ€” Cristian Mungiu, to Nordisk Film & TV Fond

In the same interview, he said he doesn't pass judgment on Barnevernet, in the film or outside it. Reactions back home in Romania, he noted, are still sharply split.

Corporal punishment has been illegal in Norway since 1987. The Bodnariu case, and the town in Fjord, turn on exactly that law.

The Oscar math

Fjord is Mungiu's first film in English, with Norwegian and Romanian dialogue mixed in, and there were questions over whether it had enough non-English dialogue to qualify for Best International Feature. The Palme settled them. Under a new Academy rule, a non-English film that wins the top prize at Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Sundance, Busan or Toronto qualifies automatically, no national committee needed. Romania picked it anyway, unanimously.

The international feature shortlist comes out December 15, 2026, nominations follow on January 21, 2027, and the ceremony is March 14, 2027. Romania has never won the category.
