Severance Season 2 Finale Could Have Used Adolescence's Trick (Ben Stiller Almost Did It)

The second season of Apple TV+’s sci-fi show almost joined the list of the recent hit series that stunned its audiences with a seemingly impossible technical brilliance.
It’s been more than a week since Severance ’s season 2 wrapped up on Apple TV+, but the show’s fans aren’t over the latest instalment yet, gushing over its impressive finale.
The second season’s last episode left its fans wondering about all possible outcomes of the cliffhanger that put the personal drama of Adam Scott’s Mark Scout on an even higher level; naturally, the climax is reached for the entire severed floor too, leaving things pending until the long-awaited resolution comes in season 3.
However, the plot twists and turns weren’t quite the only thing that had everyone talking; Severance’s technical perfection is also what has been long lying in the very basis of its immense success.
Despite the second season’s finale already being praised for both aspects, the episode could have gone even further had it followed in the footsteps of Netflix ’s recent big hit.
Severance Season 2 Finale Could Have Been Even More Epic With One-Shot Technique
Just when the show’s fans thought there couldn’t have been a better ending for the latest season, Severance’s co-director and producer Ben Stiller unveiled something more about the series’ behind-the-scenes, breaking down on what the second season’s finale was initially meant to be.
According to Stiller, his first idea was to film the last episode in one single shot, just like Netflix’s hit criminal drama Adolescence did with all of its four episodes; however, this ultimately turned out to be a failing method, so both Stiller and Severance’s cinematographer Lee Gagné decided to go with normal shots, but making those as long as possible.
“I knew from the very first shot of the episode on Mark that we wanted to keep it as continuous as possible. It almost felt like the camera was attached to the front of [the actor’s] face”, the producer revealed in a recent behind-the-scenes video with Variety.
Ben Stiller Hints There’s More for Severance Than Just One More Season
Renewed for a third season right after its second instalment’s finale premiere on March 21, Severance might have a longer way to go, or at least Ben Stiller hopes so.
In the wake of the show becoming Apple TV+’s biggest hit to-date, it’s unlikely to imagine Severance concluding after the upcoming third season, which also seems even more doubtful with all the plot twists and lacunas the series might not be able to resolve in season 3 only.
This is also what Ben Stiller had in mind while deciding to wrap the second season up with a major cliffhanger which, accordingly, might have become one of the most essential plot twists in the entire show.
“I felt it’s okay if we don’t answer the bigger questions yet, in terms of these mysteries about the show because there’s room to do that in future seasons. … This is a series that is meant to go at least a few seasons, so we can’t not make it as if we’re not going to have a second season”, Stiller said.
