Denis Villeneuve’s hit thriller from Taylor Sheridan’s script has paved the way for one sequel so far, but there might be something more to the story — here’s everything we know about Sicario’s potential threequel.

Taylor Sheridan might be booked and busy for a myriad of his own TV shows right now, but long before that he actually wrote an Oscar-nominated movie for Dune ’s Denis Villeneuve.

Released back in 2015, Sicario starring Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin had a massive success with both critics and viewers, grossing more than $80 million in the box office and securing three Oscar nominations.

The movie since then got itself a sequel titled Sicario: Day of the Soldado and will likely continue its legacy with one more instalment, but this is where things get way more complicated.

Sicario’s Next Sequel Was Confirmed Years Ago

Even though Day of the Soldado wasn’t as much of a hit as the first movie, it still had enough potential to pass on to another instalment of the crime thriller franchise.

In 2018, the same year as the sequel was released, it was announced that Sicario would get a third movie after all, now titled Sicario: Capos.

“We were so thrilled that people responded to the first one, and we felt justified in making a second because we loved it. We probably are the biggest fans of the movie. And we feel that way again. Obviously, even more than the first one, we kind of leave off a little teaser at the end. Yeah. And we would love to kind of see, you know, this was always in the back of Taylor's mind, and we loved it, and we thought, God, it would be great if we could get there. I think we'd like to do that now. I certainly feel like the second one lived up to the expectations”, Sicario’s producer Trent Luckinbill quickly confirmed to ScreenRant back then.

More Than 5 Years Later, Sicario: Capos Is Still Stuck in Production Hell

Luckinbill’s words did sound optimistic back in 2018, but they don’t do the same now, roughly seven years of literally zero progress on the movie.

First there were issues with who will actually direct the next film, and Denis Villeneuve didn’t seem to be in the picture anymore.

“But we don't know who's going to direct yet. It’s all gonna be about timing. We've got obviously a wealth of great partners on it, everybody from Taylor Sheridan to Chris McQuarrie as a partner on it, but it'll all be about the timing and what aligns with everyone's schedule”, the franchise’s producer Molly Smith revealed in an interview with Collider.

In his turn, Villeneuve also confirmed that no one had even reached out to him for directing Sicario 3, saying that “if Taylor is writing a screenplay, I would be absolutely excited to see that on screen, [but] I have not heard about [a new script or project]” in an interview with The Playlist.

Things get worse when remembered that Taylor Sheridan is currently the busiest man alive, working on multiple prequels and spinoffs to his Yellowstone – so it won’t really be a surprise if Sicario: Capos remains in the production hell for another ten years.
