Spidey's unresolved mystery from the '90s might finally find answers.

Back in the '90s, Marvel was only beginning to make attempts in live-action, while their animated series were slowly becoming iconic.

Two legendary animated TV shows from that era are still living rent-free in the hearts of many Marvel fans. We are talking about X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997) and Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998).

Not only did these animated gems become absolute fan-favorites, but they were also set in one universe. The crossover happened in a couple of episodes of the Spider-Man series.

This fact is actually a big reason why it is quite plausible that Spider-Man might appear in one of the upcoming projects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, X-Men '97.

X-Men '97 is Disney ’s upcoming continuation of the beloved X-Men series from the '90s. The animated Disney Plus’ show is set to pick up right where the original left off. And while no official release date has been announced yet, the show is expected in the early 2024.

As Spider-Man from the '90s crossed paths with the same X-Men, it would be a great opportunity to bring the character back. The Spider-Man series ended on a cliffhanger, implying that Mary Jane might still be alive out there. Fans have been waiting for a resolution for decades, and it looks like X-Men '97 might just be the right series to provide it.

The two series have a rich history of crossovers. Spider-Man once went to Professor Xavier for help with his mutation problem and teamed up with the X-Men to thwart an anti-mutant conspiracy. There were also episodes where characters like Storm appeared in Spider-Man's adventures.

Given this intertwined past, it wouldn't be a stretch to imagine Spider-Man making an appearance in X-Men '97. Plus, with the multiverse concept gaining traction in the MCU, especially after Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the possibilities are endless.

Speaking of the Multiverse of Madness, it is also speculated that Professor Xavier, who appeared in the movie, is actually the same Professor X from the '90s X-Men series.

The return of '90s X-Men is thrilling news for Marvel fans. And if Spider-Man does make an appearance, resolving one of the biggest cliffhangers in Marvel's animated history, it'll be just the perfect cherry on top.
