There was nothing holding Malcolm X’s director back while gushing over Ryan Coogler’s hit movie, and we get it.

When it comes to making socially meaningful movies, Spike Lee is one of those to pop up in mind in a heartbeat.

Having started out back in the 1980s, the director has built his cinematic legacy on culturally important aspects of American society, also being regarded as one of the boldest moviemakers who would talk about whatever they want to no matter what.

As of now, Spike Lee isn’t staying behind the camera as much as he used to, but he goes to movies instead.

Just several months back, the director joined the movement of endless praise for his pal Ryan Coogler’s hit horror movie, and few might argue about Lee giving the film too much credit.

Spike Lee Says ‘Sinners’ Is Ryan Coogler’s “Magnificent Artistry as a Storyteller”

Several weeks before the movie’s world premiere back in April, Spike Lee seemingly went to see one of Sinners’ first screenings that took place in March.

The director didn’t wait for everyone to see the movie and then to share his own review, stating right away that Sinners, for him personally, is one of the best movies released in recent years.

“I Just Had The Greatest Experience Of Watching A Film In Years. My Brother, RYAN COOGLER Invited Me To Experience His New Film SINNERS (In IMAX). His Magnificent Artistry As A Storyteller Iz On A Annudder” Level. And Y’now Brother MICHAEL B JORDAN Did His “THANG, THANG. Da Performances, Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, Original Score, Songs, Visual Effects Are DOPE… I Haven’t Felt This Way In A Movie Theatre In A Minute”, Lee wrote in his Instagram post, adding that he also felt like Ryan Coogler had just written his name in the history of cinema with Sinners.

‘Sinners’ Is the Highest-Grossing Original Horror Movie in Domestic Box Office

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, Sinners holds scores of 97% and 96% from critics and audiences
  • On IMDb, the movie is rated 7.7/10

Written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the vampire horror starring Michael B. Jordan wasn’t expected to be that much of a success when it first hit theatres.

However, the movie made it to $40 million in the box office after the opening weekend, eventually rising to $365 million and becoming the most profitable film in the US box office after surpassing 2017’s It with $328 million.

Partially inspired by Robert Rodriguez’s From Dusk Till Dawn, Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan in a double role of twin brothers who, trying to escape their troubled past, return to their hometown only to realise that a horde of vampires might be an even bigger trouble for them.
