Looks like ABC has made its choice.

Summary:

  • Station 19 is an ABC spin-off of the hit series Grey's Anatomy that focuses on the work of the fire department.
  • 911 is another procedural firefighting drama that was canceled on Fox and picked up by ABC.
  • Now that Station 19 has been confirmed to end after the upcoming season 7, fans are blaming 911 for the decision.

For many years since Grey's Anatomy debuted in 2004, ABC has relied on the show and its spin-offs to keep the nighttime scripted series crowd entertained. And in their defense, the scheme proved to work, as Grey's Anatomy remains one of the network's biggest flagships.

But time moves quickly, and the need for a change has arisen. Since Grey's Anatomy doesn't seem to be bringing viewers that much joy anymore, and the change that season 20 brings may not work as well as the producers thought, ABC seems to be thinking about diversifying.

Fortunately, their newly acquired procedural drama 911 from Fox fits the bill of everything their audience seems to like perfectly. Even better, the show comes with its own dedicated audience. There's only one downside: ABC's own Station 19 is now on the chopping block.

Station 19 Canceled After 7 Seasons

While the decision did not come out of the blue, and ever since ABC announced that it was saving 911 from cancellation on Fox, many thought that this would be the case, dedicated fans of the Grey's Anatomy spinoff were hoping that two shows would somehow coexist.

Now that the news is confirmed, Station 19 fans are not happy with the procedural that has taken its place.

While there would be nothing particularly wrong with ABC continuing two procedurals with very similar premises, it's most likely budget issues that led the network to this decision. If they wanted to match Fox's production quality for 911, it would take a lot of money. That was Fox's reason for dropping the show in the first place.

However, producing two of them and maintaining the quality seems even less possible, so the decision to cancel Station 19 now may have just saved viewers the agony of watching a few more cheaply produced seasons in order to milk whatever the network can from the fans.

There are still many questions surrounding the future of Station 19 characters who were also prominent parts of Grey's Anatomy, such as Ben Warren. But even if the production team has some answers, we won't find out just yet.

The new and final season 7 of Station 19 will premiere on March 14th at 10pm on ABC, so keep an eye out for any updates. And if you want to see the upcoming season of 911, it'll be out the same day, two hours earlier, at 8pm.
