Many didn’t have much faith in the Owen Wilson-led golf-themed comedy, but now everyone is cheering the series’ future — without one major figure though.
It seems like Owen Wilson and co is heading for yet another golf tournament in Apple TV+’s Stick which has just been renewed for a second season, according to Deadline’s report.
With a pretty familiar premise of a long-washed-up professional golfer turning into a coach for a promising rising sports star, the show is yet to continue exploring Pryce’s relationships with Santi, as well as the latter’s love drama that involves Lilly Kay’s Zero.
However, Stick’s fans aren’t really sure they want to see the same dynamics in the upcoming season 2 — or at least the same love interest.
‘Stick’ Fans Want No More Zero in Season 2
It’s fair to say Santi and Zero’s relationships have been pretty unstable throughout the first season, but sometimes the whole drama was just way too much — probably due to all the stereotypes about Gen Z that Kay’s character became a victim of.
“I hope they make a couple changes for next season, no offense to the Zero character and actress, but they had well, zero, chemistry with Santi. There was a better way to write that character than just dumping every single gen-z stereotype on them”, Redditor Zanoklido commented on the season 2 renewal news in a thread.
“For a comedy I didn’t think it was all that funny and Zero was one of the most annoying characters in recent memory”, the_dayman623 added.
“I enjoyed the show but won't be sad if they break up Santi and Zero, the whole relationship felt so forced and the chemistry was just... not there. Much respect to the actor playing Zero, it's just not a good fit”, mikegimik chimed in.
“Zero was poorly written and annoying but plenty of the backstory has me interested”, Smuff23 wrote.
‘Stick’ Creator Teases Highly Anticipated Plot Twist for Season 2
- On Rotten Tomatoes, Stick holds scores of 82% and 70% from critics and audiences
- On IMDb, the show is rated 7.3/10
Even though the show’s first season was revolving more around Pryce’s protégé Santi, viewers were having mixed feelings about Owen Wilson’s character not being that eager to return to the golf course even after years of staying away.
Luckily, that’s what will likely become the next season’s focus, according to Stick’s creator Jason Keller.
“I would love to see Pryce Cahill playing high level golf. It would be fun to see Owen out there, playing in a tournament and seeing just how good this guy is. His story sort of ended with him being 18th in the nation before his life sort of fell apart”, Keller recently told Deadline in a new interview.
He then also teased Timothy Olyphant’s return as Clark Ross in season 2, which is a promising update on Pryce/Clark’s rivalling dynamics.
“I would love to have him back if we were able to do a Season 2. I think he’s fun, and I think his dynamic with Pryce — I couldn’t get enough of it in Season 1, and I’d want to bring him back if I could in season two. He’s just so good”, Keller added.
