Stranger Things Day: still no secret ninth episode — Netflix answered the theory with a prequel instead
For the second time this year, a chunk of the Stranger Things fandom was sure a hidden episode was coming. Netflix showed up on November 6 with something else entirely.
November 6 is Stranger Things Day, the date Will Byers vanished in 1983, and this year a corner of the internet spent weeks convinced Netflix would use it to release a secret final episode. Netflix didn't. It announced a whole new show instead. Big spoilers for the series finale follow.
What Conformity Gate claims
Stranger Things ended on New Year's Eve 2025 with "Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up." A lot of viewers didn't like it, pointing to an anticlimactic fight with Vecna, loose threads and too few character deaths. Out of that came a theory: the tidy ending was an illusion, and a hidden ninth episode would reveal the real one. Fans named it Conformity Gate, because the endings felt too conventional to be true.
The original prediction said the secret episode would drop on January 7, 2026. That date came and went. Netflix's response was to change the show's social media bios to read, in all caps, "ALL EPISODES OF STRANGER THINGS ARE NOW PLAYING," E! reported.
Why fans thought it was coming on Stranger Things Day
The theory came back in the weeks before November 6, and the people who make the show didn't exactly discourage it:
- The rewatch clues: A Reddit theory pointed to details like Steve becoming a baseball coach despite never showing any interest in the sport. An Instagram account posted "Flip the tape," which fans read as side A being season 5 and side B a secret season 6.
- Jamie Campbell Bower: Vecna himself addressed Conformity Gate on The Tonight Show on October 31.
- Ross Duffer: On November 5, he posted a meme from the documentary You Can See Everything, with Billy Evans saying "I know what's coming on Stranger Things Day" and Nathan Fielder answering, "No, you don't."
- The cast: Millie Bobby Brown posted a lip-sync video captioned "If lost, please return to set," and Finn Wolfhard and Caleb McLaughlin were spotted working together in Chicago around November 2.
None of it added up to an episode. Brown's video also tagged her clothing brand, and a shoot in Chicago four days before release would be a very late way to finish a secret finale.
Ross Duffer spent the night before Stranger Things Day posting "No, you don't" at the fans who thought they knew what was coming. They didn't.
What Netflix actually announced
On November 6, Netflix unveiled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, a live-action prequel set in the 1950s and due in 2028, per What's on Netflix. The details so far:
- The team: Kate Trefry, a longtime Stranger Things writer, co-created it with the Duffers and is the showrunner. Joe Wright directs the first three episodes. The Duffers executive produce but won't run it day to day because of their deal at Paramount.
- The teaser: It's dated April 19, 1955, in Marion, Nevada. An abandoned bike sits near a restricted area at night, something like a wormhole opens in the sky, and "Sh-Boom" by The Chords plays, the same song that turned up in season 5, episode 4.
- The story: Netflix calls it a wholly new story, with new heroes, villains and mythology. Filming is expected to start in New Mexico in 2027.
The Duffers' own pitch was short: "It's Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh." It ended with an instruction: "watch the skies, nerds!"
Where the loose threads actually go
The prequel is the closest thing fans will get to answers. Matt Duffer has said the spinoff will explain the rock young Henry Creel finds in a scientist's briefcase, and that it "will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining," while warning that it's "a completely different mythology."

It also fits into a franchise that's already filling in the gaps. The animated Stranger Things: Tales from '85, set in the winter between seasons 2 and 3, premiered on April 23, 2026. The First Shadow, the Tony- and Olivier-winning stage play set in 1959 that follows teenage Henry Creel, was taped by Netflix in February, and for that recording its Nevada setting was changed to Marion. Marion is exactly where the Other Worlds teaser takes place.
Don't miss: 'Riverdale on steroids': Yellowjackets went from the next Lost to a show its fans want over
So there's no secret ninth episode, and Netflix's answer to the fans who wanted more is a show about 1955. They'll have to wait until 2028 to watch it.
