Street Fighter movie trailer: the special moves, plus an IMAX event with 7 minutes extra
There are two kinds of video game adaptations: the ones embarrassed by their source material, and the ones that put a flying Russian suplex in the marketing and dare you to blink. Guess which kind just booked IMAX screens a day before release.
The newest Street Fighter trailer has exactly one job: proving the movie will do the moves. Not gesture at the moves. Do them.
And it's a full combo string. In the footage: Ryu's Hadouken and Shoryuken, Chun-Li going full Hundred Lightning Kicks, a Zangief suplex that should require a permit, Dhalsim's Yoga Mummy, Balrog's Buffalo Headbutt, the Hundred Hand Slap, and a Dragonlash Kick imported straight from Street Fighter 6. Subtle? No. Correct? Extremely.
The roster remains unhinged (complimentary)
A reminder of who director Kitao Sakurai talked into this:
- Andrew Koji as Ryu and Noah Centineo as Ken — the load-bearing bromance;
- Callina Liang as Chun-Li;
- David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, because when you need a villain you call Dastmalchian;
- Cody Rhodes as Guile and Roman Reigns as Akuma, WWE's gift to casting directors;
- Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson as Balrog, Orville Peck as Vega, Andrew Schulz as Dan, Mel Jarnson as Cammy.
Rhodes, for his part, has already leaked his own moveset on the Pat McAfee Show:
"Bit of a spoiler of what is gonna be, I hope, a monster movie. Guile does a few things in terms of the video game — Guile's gonna do the Sonic Boom, the Flash Kick."
He also insisted on doing his own wire stunts, and promises his Guile is "different, perhaps, than a straight military man." The charisma-to-flat-top pipeline is secure.
The Bonus Round, literally
The IMAX play is called the Street Fighter: Bonus Round Fan Event, and here's the deal:
- When: Thursday, October 15, 7 p.m. local time — one day before the wide release on October 16;
- Where: participating IMAX theaters;
- The loot: an exclusive collector's print (while supplies last) and seven minutes of bonus footage the regular Friday crowd won't see.
Seven extra minutes, a poster, and first bragging rights. Somewhere out there, a Guile-hair popcorn bucket is waiting too. Perfect. No notes. Round one, fight.
