This series represents one of the rarest genre mixes.
Fantasy elements can be found in many genres, from mystery to horror. They can be mysterious abilities of the main characters or creatures that try to invade our world to carry out their evil plans.
The rarest duo is probably a mix of fantasy and western – the only one representative that first comes to mind is Jim Jarmusch's feature-length Dead Man.
Nine years ago, a remarkable project was released that was right at the intersection of these two genres – as if Supernatural and Yellowstone had a kid.
Wynonna Earp debuted on Syfy in 2016 and aired for four seasons, transporting fans to the Wild West with fantasy elements.
What is Wynonna Earp About?
Wynonna Earp is the great-great-granddaughter of legendary Wild West Sheriff Wyatt Earp. She inherits from him a special ability to send revenants – reincarnated criminals he once killed – back to hell. To do this, she needs a magical revolver, the Peacemaker, passed down through the Earp family.
Wynonna returns to her hometown of Purgatory, where not only revenants await her, but also other supernatural creatures who live in the Ghost River Triangle – a dangerous area near the Canadian Rockies.
She is aided by the immortal Doc Holliday, Wyatt's former partner, her sister Waverly and the secret government organization Black Badge Division, which protects the earth from evil forces.
Wynonna Earp Is an Adaptation of the Comic Book Series
Wynonna Earp was created by Emily Andras, a writer and producer who previously worked on Lost Girl – one of the best occult fantasy series of the 2010s.
While Beau Smith's comic books serve as inspiration for the show, the premise of the series – a fictional heir to a real-life cowboy battles demons attacking the town – is the only actual borrowing from the original source.
Wynonna Earp Borrows a Lot From Supernatural, but Goes Its Own Way
Wynonna Earp looks like a full-fledged heir to Supernatural – instead of two brothers, there are two sisters, one of whom is not eager to get acquainted with the supernatural world, but is forced to do so because of a tragedy. And, of course, there is a magic gun that can kill demons once and for all.
The main character herself resembles Jessica Jones – Wynonna is a sarcastic and aggressive, half-broken woman with superpowers. Although Wynonna rides a motorcycle instead of a horse, the series nevertheless has that feel of old westerns.
Where to Stream Wynonna Earp?
If you haven't found anything better than Supernatural and you know who Taylor Sheridan is, then Wynonna Earp is a show you should definitely give a chance.
Wynonna Earp is available to watch on Netflix.
