Max's pirate saga doesn't have a season 3 green light yet, but maybe it's a good thing?

Summary:

  • Our Flag Means Death season 2 has recently ended
  • Many fans believe that season 2 finale seemed a lot like the series finale
  • Looks like the majority of creators agree with the sentiment

A great show can instantly be ruined by an underwhelming finale. HBO series know this too well — ask Game of Thrones fans, who are still bitter about the way season 8 basically butchered the entire iconic show.

But for Our Flag Means Death, a pirate rom-com developed by Max, things look way more optimistic. The show has recently wrapped its second season, and did it so beautifully that even the most hardcore fans find themselves begging for the second chapter to be the show's last.

Not because they actually want things to end, no — because they feel like it is just the right moment for OFMD to bow out and not overstay the welcome.

What Does Taika Waititi Think of Our Flag Means Death S2 Ending?

According to Waititi, who portrayed Ed a.k.a. Blackbeard on the show, things couldn't be more perfect. In fact, his reaction to the season finale kind of explains why a third season may not be necessary.

The Blackbeard actor pointed out that the season 2 finale felt like "a natural end to their story," meaning his character and Stede's relationship.

"Just because I feel like, you know, they’ve been through so much and then wind up in that nice place at a happy ending,” Waititi told Consequence.

However, the actor doesn't rule out that Our Flag Means Death can still return with new stories to tell.

Will There Be Our Flag Means Death Season 3?

Even though OFMD season 2 has ended on a high note, Waititi notes that the show doesn't need to revolve exclusively around the sweet couple.

“I love the show so much and maybe it can survive without Rhys and I. Maybe, I don’t know. I do I think the character of Blackbeard is something I’m really proud of,” he said.

In an earlier interview to Consequence, series creator David Jenkins mentioned that to him, Our Flag Means Death was a story that needed three chapters — and the third one would still include Stede and Ed. In season 3, according to Jenkins, the two would be "learning how to keep and hang onto that love as it gets more mature."

Still, the creator noted that going further than three seasons would definitely be impossible — mostly because Waititi's schedule is a pretty busy one.

“I feel like that’s about as long as you can hang on to somebody who’s directing 50 things at once,” he said.

So far, there have been no announcements from Max as to the continuation of Our Flag Means Death.
