What some consider a modern classic, Quentin Tarantino despises. Here's why he gave True Detective the cold shoulder.

It's no secret that beside being an iconic director, Tarantino is also passionately outspoken about the industry. He never shies away from speaking his mind.

But this take on True Detective might be one of his most surprising verdicts yet.

“I tried to watch the first episode of season one, and I didn’t get into it at all. I thought it was really boring,” Tarantino said during his talk with Vulture,

His rant, however, didn't stop there as he continued to speak on then-new Season 2, saying:

“And season two looks awful. Just the trailer — all these handsome actors trying to not be handsome and walking around looking like the weight of the world is on their shoulders. It’s so serious, and they’re so tortured, trying to look miserable with their mustaches and grungy clothes.”

True Detective (2014-Present): Behind the Show That Got Tarantino Talking

  • On Rotten Tomatoes, True Detective has 79% from critics and 59% from the audience.
  • On IMDb, True Detective is rated 8.9/10.

For those unfamiliar with the show, True Detective is an anthology series that focuses on detailed police investigations and the dark underbelly of the process.

Each season tells a new story with a different cast of characters and setting. The series has received praise for its immersive storytelling, outstanding performances, and philosophical undertones.

Fans Respond to Tarantino’s Take on True Detective

“Listen, his description of season two’s trailer is pretty funny. He has sort of always struck me as someone who doesn’t really consume contemporary media and it shows in his work. No hate on QT, but I understand why TD wouldn’t appeal to him. Scorsese felt that way about The Sopranos, it just didn’t connect with him how one would think it would,” Redditor cdj2000 wrote.

“[It] makes sense his movies are the complete opposite of TD. He makes violent movies but there is an undertone of comedy throughout. TD is far too serious for his taste,” Redditor DefaultPain said.

But what do you think? Is Tarantino right about True Detective being “boring”?
