The Diplomat season 4 on Netflix — release date, episode count, cast: Austin Dennison returns while Kate's husband sits a heartbeat from the presidency
Kate Wyler spent three seasons being groomed for the vice presidency. The job went to her husband, and now she thinks he helped steal a nuclear weapon.
All eight episodes of The Diplomat season 4 dropped on Netflix on October 15, 2026 — the fourth October release in a row, a cadence creator Debora Cahn has turned into the show's quiet flex in an era of two-year streaming gaps. Keri Russell is back as ambassador Kate Wyler, Rufus Sewell as Vice President Hal Wyler, and David Gyasi returns as Austin Dennison, the British foreign secretary whose almost-romance with Kate remains the show's longest-burning fuse.
The season picks up seconds after the cliffhanger. Season 3 ended with Kate asking Hal four words — "Did you take it?" — about the missing Russian nuclear drone, and with Hal telling President Grace Penn that his wife knows.
"I was excited to have a more existentially hanging cliff."
— Debora Cahn, to The Hollywood Reporter, on ending season 3 mid-marriage
Who's in, and who got promoted
- Returning leads: Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn (Eidra Park), Rory Kinnear (PM Trowbridge), Ato Essandoh (Stuart Hayford).
- Upgraded to series regulars: Allison Janney as President Grace Penn, Bradley Whitford as First Gentleman Todd Penn, and Nana Mensah as chief of staff Billie Appiah. Janney and Whitford playing a married presidential couple is the West Wing reunion the internet ordered in 1999 and received 27 years later.
- Episode count: eight hour-long episodes, same as seasons 1 and 3 — the six-episode dip of season 2 remains a one-time offense.
- The premise: per Netflix's synopsis, "one catastrophic moment" shatters the fragile US-UK peace Kate brokered.
Cahn has described the new season as a study of three marriages under the same pressure. Speaking to Deadline after the drop, she framed it as shuffling the pairs: "What does it look like when you're having your first really big fight?"
The Dennison of it all
Dennison's return is the headline for a reason: season 3 finally detonated the Kate-Dennison tension and then immediately defused it — the encounter Kate herself wrote off to Hal as "a swing and a miss." Cahn told The Daily Beast the strategy was always to "let the tension and the heat between Kate and Dennison grow and grow," and that it mattered that he was the one who pulled the plug.

The show's central love triangle now has a security clearance problem: one vertex is the vice president, and the other spent last season warning Kate about her own government.
Netflix hasn't announced a season 5, but the show's clockwork release history and an Emmy win for the series suggest the question is when, not if. Deadline's post-mortem with Cahn and the cast went up within a day of the premiere — fair warning that it spoils a finale the trades are calling the show's most dramatic swing yet.
