Homeland gave TV its most famous unraveling CIA officer. The Diplomat gave it an ambassador who never wanted the job. One of them aged better than the other, and it isn't the one that won best drama.

When Netflix launched The Diplomat in April 2023, the comparisons wrote themselves. A brilliant, difficult woman in American national security and a creator who'd worked on Showtime's Homeland: Debora Cahn is listed among Homeland's executive producers, and The Diplomat is her show.

Season 4 arrived on October 15, 2026, which makes it a fair fight at last. Keri Russell's Kate Wyler now has four seasons to Claire Danes' eight as Carrie Mathison. The question is who held up better over the long haul.

Two women, two jobs

The setups rhyme without matching:

  • Carrie Mathison: A CIA officer with bipolar disorder who becomes convinced a rescued American POW, Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis), has been turned. Homeland ran on Showtime from 2011 to 2020, across 96 episodes.
  • Kate Wyler: A career diplomat dropped into the job of U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom in the middle of an international crisis, while her husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), a better-known diplomat, keeps getting in her way.

Carrie's drama is about whether she's right. Kate's is about whether anyone will let her do the job she's obviously good at. That's a lighter engine, and it turns out to be a longer-lasting one.

The scoreboard

Homeland started at the top. Its first season scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, won the Emmy for outstanding drama series, and Danes went on to win two lead actress Emmys. Then it never got back there:

  • Homeland: 100%, 93%, 80%, 81%, 88%, 78%, 81%, 85% across its eight seasons. The decline started in season 3, which ended with Brody hanged in Iran, and reviews soured as that season went on, per Wikipedia).
  • The Diplomat: 84%, 95%, 97%, 96%, per Rotten Tomatoes. It climbed every season through three, and season 4 opened a single point under its peak.

That's the whole case in two lines. Homeland had the better first season and spent seven more chasing it. The Diplomat had the weaker start and has been improving ever since.

Homeland peaked in its first season. The Diplomat's worst season is still its first one.

What made The Diplomat keep climbing

A lot of it is casting. Allison Janney joined as Vice President, now President, Grace Penn, and won the supporting actress Emmy for it in September 2026. For season 4, she and Bradley Whitford, as First Gentleman Todd Penn, are both series regulars, and the season shot in London, Washington, New York and Lucca, Italy.

The season 4 plot puts Grace and Hal behind a plan to seize a Russian nuclear weapon, and Kate, double-crossed, teams up with Todd to stop it. That's about as Homeland as The Diplomat has ever gotten, and the reviews say it works.

So, is Kate Wyler a worthy replacement for Carrie Mathison? She's a different kind of hero, less tortured and a lot funnier. But on the one measure the headline asks about, she's already outlasted her: Homeland never topped its first season, and The Diplomat is still trying to top its last one.
