The first seasons of The Handmaid's Tale were a huge success in part because of June's inner voice narration. Why do fans think the show was robbed of it? Let's find out!

The Handmaid's Tale is now in season 6, which has been announced as its last, and fans of the show can't help but reminisce about the past seasons. And they say that the worst mistake the show's creators made was cutting out June's internal narration.

June Osborne's POV was the key point in the earlier seasons of The Handmaid's Tale, and it was definitely something that drew viewers in from the very first episode, making them want to get to know the person whose thoughts they were entering.

“I'm realizing that as much as I always loved the show in spite of its missteps along the way, June's POV was a major tether for me in staying connected to the general narrative both intellectually and emotionally,” Redditor teenageidle said.

Many fans say that her inner voice leading the series was what made them fall in love with the character in the first place, and getting rid of it was a bad decision. Especially since the history remembers another time it did wrong to the core story of Margaret Atwood’s book.

“They definitely should have kept it up. The movie version they made decades ago didn't do too well and they said it was probably because they cut out the narrations they planned on doing. It makes a pretty big difference,” Crafty_Damage1187 said.

Why Was It Important to Lose June’s POV in Later Seasons of the Handmaid’s Tale?

However, some fans still recognize the reason why the show's creators decided to silence June's inner monologue. As the woman got out of Gilead and, in a sense, regained her freedom, there was less and less need for her to be silent. She was ready to speak up.

Another reason fans mention is the fact that the show was probably becoming more ensemble-driven, and June was one of many, though still front and center.

“I think their reasoning was June's POV was no longer the "main" one especially once she got closer to leaving Gilead for the first time and they were juggling more characters, but honestly they juggled multiple POVs pretty well before so I don't really know why it shifted,” Redditor tedenageidle said.
