The Harsh Reality of 'The Sandman' Season 2: Dream Is Too Annoying for a Main Character

Netflix’s adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book series didn’t dare try an anthology format. The Sandman’s fans think it should have.
It’s almost time to wrap it all up for Netflix’s The Sandman as the second season’s part 2 is coming to the streamer’s platform in just a couple of weeks; however, the overall excitement might not be as impressive as before.
Based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book series of the same name, the TV adaptation primarily focuses on Morpheus aka Dream, a member of the Endless family that represents some essential elements of humanity’s existence.
Unlike the original source material, Netflix opted for building the narrative around Tom Sturridge’s character only — and it’s fair to say many fans would prefer to follow someone else instead.
‘The Sandman’ Fans Are Sick and Tired of Morpheus
Having started out quite well in The Sandman’s first season, the character seemingly went into a wrong direction by the time the second season’s first part was released around a week ago.
Ahead of the second part’s premiere on July 24, fans aren’t expecting anything good from Morpheus, already becoming pretty confused by the character’s actions and motivation.
“The whole season was just dream asking his siblings how to fix his stupid mistakes and generally being a d–k. No big narrative like in season one defeating a great nemesis just: “oh yeah maybe I shouldn’t have… I need to fix that because death/ delirium said it”, Redditor BrainpainFanNr4567 complained in a thread.
“Dream's was such an asshole, and it was SO OUT OF CHARACTER for some reason. I know, he's supposed to be more of an asshole in the comics, but as a show watcher, the character did a full 180”, PotentialCoach6038 commented.
Still, some fans saw something much more profound in a major change that Morpheus has gone through by season 2.
“The Sandman is about many things, the main one being change. In particular, the way Morpheus changes. I don't think you're supposed to like how he [sometimes] treats others, the books ( and show) are about him finding out that he doesn't like it either”, TheGunslingerRechena revealed in a different thread.
‘The Sandman’ Showrunner Was Originally Planning the Show as Anthology
With many fans now wishing The Sandman’s Allan Heinberg had known how things would go much earlier, the show has actually missed out on a major opportunity to develop an anthology that some are craving for.
“Anthologies are very difficult to pull off [because] every time you introduce a new cast of characters, you have to earn the audience’s trust, love and rooting interest”, Heinberg said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
He then also added that the writers would try to centre more on other characters rather than Morpheus, though the audiences’ reaction was way less enthusiastic every time.
“Anytime we drifted into other people’s storylines, they got confused and lost interest because it’s called The Sandman and they thought the show was about the Sandman, which we all understand”, the showrunner revealed.
Meanwhile, The Sandman’s season 2 part 2 will arrive on Netflix on July 24.
