‘The Hunger Games’ Just Found Its New Katniss Everdeen, but There’s a Catch

The Hunger Games’ upcoming prequel might be giving a glimpse into Katniss Everdeen’s past, but there’s another related project you likely haven’t heard about yet.
Things are currently moving forward for The Hunger Games’ next chapter titled Sunrise on the Reaping, but the upcoming movie isn’t the only major addition to the franchise that comes in the next several months.
Created by Suzanne Collins, the original book series of the same name found worldwide recognition after the release of the first movie that spawned three more sequels and a themed park in Dubai.
However, a theatrical version of the dystopian story is coming together later this year, and it has just secured its future lead.
‘The Hunger Games’ Stage Play Casts Mia Carragher as Katniss Everdeen
As the story is about to adapt a completely new format, Jennifer Lawrence’s role has just been passed on to a new young actress whose casting for the upcoming play was announced on July 29.
After the production gave a sneak peek into Katniss Everdeen’s new look in its official Instagram account, Carragher too broke her silence on the matter, stating that Katniss’ role is a major career achievement because she feels connected to the character.
“I’m really excited to play Katniss. I relate to her quite a lot. I think she’s very fearless, but then she’s also got that nurturing quality about her. Everyone needs to come and watch ‘The Hunger Games: On Stage’ because it’s going to be nothing like you’ve ever seen”, Carragher said in a posted video.
Ironically, the actress, who is also the daughter of former Liverpool FC player Jamie Carragher, is set to star alongside The Hunger Games’ actor Josh Hutcherson in the future comedy film Let’s Love.
“The Hunger Games: On Stage”, in its turn, will premiere on October 20 at the Trouboudor Canary Wharf Theatre in London.
Will Katniss Appear in ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ Too?
Since the prequel is set around 25 years before the events of The Hunger Games, there are zero chances to see Jennifer Lawrence there.
However, Katniss might still get a brief mention if the movie is to follow the original book’s structure and include an epilogue that gives a glimpse into Haymitch Abernathy’s life in District 12 several years after his victory in the 50th Hunger Games.
In “Sunrise on the Reaping”’s last chapter, Haymitch describes his visit to the Everdeens where he gets a chance to hold newborn Katniss, also making it clear that he made peace with both Burdock and his wife Asterid after their relationship fell apart at some point.
The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will be released in theatres worldwide on November 20, 2026.
