Ellie’s revenge journey and hunt for Abby might be interrupted by The Last of Us’ imminent introduction of the video game’s most horrifying monster. Here’s what the HBO series’ Craig Mazin had to say about the future episodes’ potential plot twist.

Things are about to swirl even more dramatically in The Last of Us’ ongoing second season now that Ellie is about to discover something even more scary in the Seattle hospital’s basement.

Released on Max last Sunday, the instalment’s episode 5 followed Ellie through the abandoned Seattle hospital as she chased Nora into a sealed floor infected with the airborne Cordyceps spores.

Even though the series is yet to show the final outcome of their encounter and Nora’s revelations about Abby’s location, it’s now pretty clear that Ellie will still have to pass some time more in the hospital, likely due to her discovery of another infected floor and what has been hiding there all along.

‘The Last of Us’ Creator Says Only Game Players Might Know “What’s on B3”

In the show’s latest episode, Ellie and Nora made it to one of the sealed floors called B2, finding out that a group of soldiers have remained there after getting infected via the spores.

However, the hospital hides more secrets than Ellie knows about so far, and there might be something that even her immunity can’t really handle.

“There’s also an introduction here of a concept. And the concept is that there is depth under this building. We understand that there are horrors in B2, even if we have not seen them yet. We understand that they’re there. But note, nobody knows what’s on B3—just leaving that out there. I think some people who played the game might know”, The Last of Us’ showrunner Craig Mazin revealed during a talk for the show’s official podcast.

What Is Next for ‘The Last of Us’ Based on the Game’s Storyline, Explained

Even though the HBO series has just introduced a new major threat, which is the Cordyceps infection spreading via airborne spores, Mazin’s words hint at something even more horrifying that the characters have yet to experience.

Those familiar with the video game might have already assumed that the danger of the basement’s level 3 that Mazin was talking about is none other than the Rat King, the most terrifying and dangerous type of the infected in The Last of Us.

In the game, the Rat King is an anomaly composed of multiple stalkers, clickers, and a bloater that have been fused together by the Cordyceps fungus.

Possessing even more strength than the bloater, the creature can split into two parts and thus cause an even bigger damage to both people and infrastructure.

The video game also suggests that the Rat King was made up of some of the very first people to get infected, spending more than 20 years in the hospital’s basement and developing the fungal growths thanks to the omnipresent airborne spores.

When Is ‘The Last of Us’ Next Episode Being Released?

The show’s season 2 episode 6 will arrive on Max on May 18. The season’s finale will premiere on the platform on May 25.
