Peter Sutherland's last mission is officially in the can — and the show that was once Netflix's biggest surprise hit is heading for the exit on its own terms, more or less.

The Night Agent has finished shooting its final season. Production on season 4 wrapped on September 30 after a May-to-September shoot, and Gabriel Basso marked the occasion with a wrap video promising the ending won't be a quiet one:

"We've worked really hard to make this an explosive series finale."

The accompanying behind-the-scenes footage shows Peter escaping a burning passenger plane on an airfield, so "explosive" appears to be a production report, not a metaphor. As for when you'll see it: Netflix has confirmed only a 2027 release, with no date. The show's own history argues for winter — seasons 1 through 3 premiered in March, January, and February respectively — though some outlets peg it later in the year. Either way, the wrap means the wait is now a post-production problem, not a filming one.

Ending by choice (with an asterisk)

The paperwork tells an interesting story. Netflix renewed the show on March 6, just two weeks after season 3 dropped — then announced it was the final season on the very day cameras rolled. Showrunner Shawn Ryan framed it as creative closure:

"I've been obsessed with eventually delivering a proper and thrilling conclusion to the show and to Peter Sutherland's journey."

The asterisk is the trend line. Season 3 pulled 8.4 million views in its first four days — down 40% from season 2 and nearly 60% from the season 1 phenomenon that made this Netflix's defining 2023 hit. A planned ending for a cooling franchise is the streaming equivalent of leaving the party while people still sort of want you there.

What season 4 is working with

  • Peter, shot but alive, ended season 3 on extended leave with every intention of returning to Night Action — the plane footage suggests the leave doesn't last.
  • Luciane Buchanan returns alongside Basso, with the final season teasing "new friends" and "new foes" still unnamed.
  • Loose threads everywhere: the disgraced Hagans fled the White House into a media deal, Isabel took Monroe's encrypted files to Barcelona, and The Father closed season 3 by apparently eliminating Freya.
  • A new home: the production relocated to Los Angeles with a $31.6 million California tax credit, making Peter's last stand a hometown job.

Sometime in 2027, the phone rings one last time.
